Anyone who might think Crime Stoppers doesn't work need only look at its results for the first three years of operation in Cape Girardeau.
Crime Stoppers has received 224 tips, has paid out $6,250 in reward money and has cleared 63 cases. In its first six months, Crime Stoppers was responsible for clearing a rash of home burglaries, including 16 that involved elderly victims. Just recently, tips led to the arrests of two people accused of vandalizing the old Notre Dame High School.
The reason Crime Stoppers is so successful is that it protects the identity of people who offer information about crimes and rewards them for their efforts. Most who provide information wouldn't get involved if they had to identify themselves.
It is true that the majority of those who have been apprehended through Crime Stoppers were not dangerous criminals. But it is nice to know that there is a program that can aid law enforcement in solving crimes of any nature.
The number to call to provide information on a crime is 332-0500. Crime Stoppers works.
