If you see a motorcyclist outfitted in leather, you may get the wrong idea. A tough biker or gang image may come to mind. But area motorcycle groups are working to change that image. Bikers have worked hard to improve their image by supporting such worthwhile causes as the March of Dimes Bikers for Babies ride and Toys for Tots.

Over a recent weekend, 380 bikers raised more than $20,000 for the March of Dimes. That's an impressive goal for any one-day fund raiser.

The Bikers for Babies was the first such event in Cape Girardeau. But organizers are hoping it becomes an annual outing.

The event attracted bikers from Missouri and several neighboring states for the 60-mile route from Arena Park to Perryville and back.

These bikers came from all walks of life: bankers, retirees, ministers and more. They certainly didn't fit the Hell's Angels stereotype.

These bikers should be proud of their accomplishment -- both in promoting the March of Dimes and educating people about motorcycle safety and those who bike.
