Entertainment isn't just about music and art and bars. Sometimes it's about helping people while you're having fun.
The Alzheimer's Association has organized a Celebrity Sports Trivia Night at the Cape Girardeau Country Club on March 25, and it sounds to me like a fun, charitable event. A "regional sports celebrity" will lead each table in the contest.
At first I was skeptical. Sports trivia? Really?
The last time my Local, some friends and I did trivia out at the Country Club (he and I are members), we failed at the retired Cardinals category. Sports celebrity or not, I figured my chances weren't good.
Then Teresa Birk with the association called me.
Turns out, those thoughtful organizers realized people might be turned off by hardball sports questions like who won the first Golden Gloves tournament in 1923 and such. She said they've come up with a varied list of question that even "sports-challenged" people like myself would know. Things like matching ad slogans to companies or naming the most popular beer consumed at tailgates.
They have a silent auction set up, door prizes and awards for winning teams.
You'll have help from the table's celebrities -- coaches and players from the area and the Southeast Missourian's own Marty Mishow.
The Sports Trivia Night costs $25 a person and includes heavy hors d'oeuvres, drink tickets and access to your sports celebrity. Purchase tickets at the Cape Girardeau Country Club or e-mail teresa.birk@alzstl.org.
The tailgate party will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m., when trivia starts. Teams must be registered by 6:30.
