A new emergency veterinary clinic has opened in Southeast Missouri. Animal Emergency Center in Scott City offers emergency care and 24-hour critical care. Since the clinic opened in mid-March, owner Dr. Stephen Williams said some pet owners have traveled from as far away as 100 miles to receive care for their animals. Among the 30 to 40 emergency surgeries his staff has completed so far are trauma procedures and treatment for animals struck by vehicles.

Williams said he's been planning the clinic for one-and-a-half years and picked the location at 3257 East Outer Road because of its convenient access to Interstate 55. The 4,000-square-foot facility can serve between 30 and 40 animals at a time.

Williams, who owns practices in Sikeston, Mo., and Charleston, Mo., said after-hours vet clinics have become necessary because of the value pet owners place on their animals.

"Pets are part of the family now," Williams said. "So they're treating them like their children. They try to keep their companions around as long as possible."

For now, the clinic is open from 5:30 p.m. Friday to 7:30 a.m. Monday. When he hires a third veterinarian he plans to extend the days of operation to seven days a week. Animal Emergency Center can be reached at 334-3400

* Reminder on business news submissions: I've talked with some business owners over the past few weeks who assumed items about relocations, remodelings, closings, openings or other happenings of their corporation cost money. However, as always, such newsworthy items are free, as a service to the public and business owner alike.
