By John Koch, DVMQuestion: We are considering giving my mother a puppy for Christmas. She lives alone, and I think the company would do her good. I plan to go to the Humane Society to make the selection. Are there certain things I should watch for to insure that I am getting a healthy puppy?
Answer: Your intentions certainly sound admirable. Anytime someone is contemplating giving a pet for Christmas, some caution might be suggested. First, are you absolutely sure the gift of a living creature will be warmly received? A pet is a big responsibility. Pets have to be fed, trained and exercised. This must be done every single day. Time is required for playing with and entertaining the pet as well as for providing the necessities. Patience is needed for housetraining and for the inevitable accidents that will occur. Expenses will be incurred for food, toys and health care. When leaving town for a few days on vacation or to visit with a relative, you must provide for the care of your pet.
Pets are wonderful additions to a household. They make splendid companions that give unconditional love and friendship. Psychologists have repeatedly shown that people with pets live longer and are generally happier because of them. They may provide a measure of protection and enrich our lives in ways too numerous to mention. There is only one requirement to receive all the good that pets can bestow, and that is a willingness to be committed to them. If there is any doubt that such a commitment will be made, then look for another gift.
The Humane Society is an excellent place to look for a pet. Look for bright eyes, a friendly tail and the energy to please. Nearly all the veterinarians in the area provide a free physical exam to pets adopted from the shelter. The health of your new pal can be verified at that visit. Good luck, and merry Christmas!
