"On Monday afternoon, you can save a life." So read the American Red Cross postcard mailed to us, announcing the next blood drive date. So I went. I was a little tired from a vacation trip, but in great health, so I make it a habit, and try to go often. It was hot, 91 degrees, so it didn't pay to be in too big a hurry to do anything. Yet giving blood is such a simple thing one can do to help others. The benefits others receive far outweigh any slight discomfort (and it really is only slight!) and the time I gave up. It is said eight people can benefit from one pint of blood: and, if not eight, for the one person who really needs it, it is often a lifesaver.
The benefits of donating blood (free snacks too!) are many, but to me, the whole idea serves as a reminder to me of what Jesus Christ has done for each and every one of us.
Jesus Christ died on the Christ to set us free from sin and death. "God made Him who knew no sin (Jesus) to be sin for us, so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God." Cor. 5:21)
Yes, Jesus spilled his blood for us, he died on the cross for us,
he died for us, that we may receive eternal life. "The blood of
Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:7) The words of
Jesus himself emphasized what He did for us: "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me." (Mt.26:28)
"Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life."
(John 6:54)
Jesus gave his life, not just a pint of blood, but all of it. He did this to take the punishment we deserved for our sins, so that if we put our trust in him, we receive his reward of eternal life for perfect righteousness.
Of course, this is what Holy Communion is all about. But not only in church, not only when I see wine, but when I give blood, I remember the perfect sacrifice of Jesus' blood -- for me! It's not only for me, a clergyman, it's for anyone who will receive Jesus by faith. One of my favorite T-shirts is one picturing Christ on the cross with the slogan, "This blood's for you." And it is! Believe it! Put your trust in Jesus Christ to save you, and He will. Praise be to God!
