DENNIS O'SHIELDS AND PEGGY SCOTT

Hello surfers. I'm back. My son, Daniel Allan, is 2 months old, not quite old enough to sit at the keyboard yet. But his older brother and sisters spent much of their summer vacation in front of the computer with mom. By the way, my name is Peggy, in case you've forgotten.

I've arrived back at work just in time for Elvis Week 20. This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, but Elvis is alive on the Internet.

In memory of Elvis's death, Joni Adams, has taken the week off. Dennis O'Shields has agreed to check out Elvis with me.

Dennis: I think the whole celebration is kind of gruesome. I can see celebrating someone like Gengis Khan or Hitler's death, but Elvis Presley?

Peggy: I think Elvis fans look for any excuse to party. Since we are smack in the middle of Elvis Week at Graceland lets visit the official website of Elvis's home.

Special events planned this week include Elvis in Concert '97 via video technology will perform a technology enhanced performance. I guess they are using old footage, unless the Men in Black movie was right and Elvis isn't really dead. The $80 tickets are all sold out.

Dennis: Let's see what we can learn about Elvisology, Graceland's term for statistical information on the life and career of Elvis. Here is a month-by-month rundown of Elvis' entire life.

Peggy: Did you know Elvis was the second of identical twins. The first Jesse Garon was born dead. Elvis was alive and healthy. He was an only child. Or that in 1946, his parents couldn't afford the bicycle Elvis wanted for his birthday and talked him into a guitar instead.

Dennis: Elvis received a posthumous award for his 110 gold, platinum and multi-platinum songs. He's truly No. 1. The Beetles came in No. 2 with 41 hits. Can you believe this? He had 149 songs on Billboard charts, 114 in top 40s and 18 at No. 1. He spent a total of 80 weeks at No. 1. These are figures only on pop charts and only in America.

Peggy: Look, here's shopping at the Elvis mall. You can buy the pink Cadillac calculator, only $19.95, or Elvis argyle socks, just $9.95, and they accept all major credit cards.

Dennis: Here's the Elvis Motion Lamp. It gyrates, of course. It plugs into the wall but also requires batteries. Explain that to me.

Peggy: You can buy typical tourist T-shirts but no white jump suits. Elvis fans may want to check out the official fan club site at

Dennis: The Elvis fan club in San Diego holds its own Elvis Week in San Diego this week. I guess they wanted to cash in.

Peggy: For fans who can't make the pilgrimage to Graceland, this site includes photos taken inside Elvis' abode, including his bedroom aboard his jet and the famed jungle room.

Dennis: Here you can find the King's recipes for peanut butter and banana sandwiches and sweet potato pie, and more biographical information.

Peggy: The Memphis' newspaper, the Commercial Appeal, includes newspaper clips, old photographs, etc. about the King.

Dennis: Oh, oh, oh! Here's Elvis sightings.

Peggy: On this bulletin board people describe, with varying degrees of sincerity, their personal Elvis sightings or stories.

Dennis: One writes: Elvis and I do a lot of fishing together. Others say he's alive, well and working at Kmart or at a Tyson chicken processing plant or at Howard's Donuts in midtown Memphis or living on the space station Mir for the past two years Oh, and according to this site, Howard Hughes is also alive.

Send us your favorite web sites at click@semissourian.com. As Elvis would say, "Thank you. Thank you very much."
