You have only one more Friday to enjoy the fine fried chicken and fish at the Elks Lodge. Serving is from 4 to 7 p.m. It is a great opportunity to catch up with your neighbors and local residents.
The Chaffee General Baptist Church is having a yard/bake sale Good Friday and Saturday, March 30-31, from 7 to 2 p.m. The church youth will be selling pulled pork sandwiches, pulled pork nachos and nachos 'n cheese. This important event helps pay for the youth to attend church camp.
The Senior Center will also be holding an important fundraising event next weekend. Their annual yard sale is from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, 7 to 2 p.m. Good Friday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. The center will be closed for Good Friday.
Citywide Cleanup is April 10 and April 12 depending on your scheduled bulk trash pickup day. In walking around town, there are plenty of houses with unused items stacked up in the yard and on porches; items such as bikes, yard art, toys, faded plastic flowers, chairs and rusty grills. The city will not pick up tires or batteries, but will pick up appliances. A complete list is available at City Hall. This is a great opportunity to do some major spring cleaning, ridding your yard of clutter and other items that you are not using. Let's clean up, Chaffee!
City Hall reminds residents to update their telephone numbers with them and also to renew licenses for ATVs and golf carts. Mark your calendar for April 27, when Scott County Animal Clinic will be holding a pet clinic in the back of City Hall from 3 to 5 p.m. Remember that dogs need a city license as well.
With all the rain we've had, the city has just recently had some dry days to clean the streets of debris. We thank them for a job well done!
The Chaffee Drive-in had a stellar opening day. Their new flavors of caramel and salty caramel have been big hits. We know of two local men who are especially happy that ice cream season is here.
The 2018 Membership Drive continues for the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber usually meets the second Wednesday of each month at noon for lunch. The next meeting will be April 11 at the First Commercial Bank. The Chamber welcomes new membership dues and donations to continue its work in community projects such as Meals on Wheels, Citywide Yard Sale, Christmas Parade and street decorations, German Days, FBLA Sponsorship and College Scholarship. Another project is Residence of the Month, which will return in April. Businesses and individuals are invited to attend monthly meetings and share their thoughts and ideas. Individual dues are $15 and businesses are $35-$100 depending on gross sales.
Be proactive and vote next Tuesday, April 3 for city councilpersons and the use-tax measure.
The tulip trees are in full bloom, soon to be followed by the beautiful dogwoods and crab apple trees. Other trees and shrubs are budding out and soon there will be a burst of color when the tulips open up. What a glorious sight, just in time for Easter. Although we know Easter is a religious holiday and all about the crucifixion of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection, we also enjoy Easter egg hunts and baskets, the chocolate bunnies and the Easter Bunny hoppin' down the bunny trail! We wish you all a very Happy Easter and safe travel for those of you who are hitting the road. Please check road closures before heading out. If you plan to travel in Arkansas, you might want to take an alternate route. There are major delays with the ongoing major bridge construction projects on I-40 especially between Forrest City and West Memphis.
Remember to tell those special people in your life you love them -- those three words mean so much.
