The next Vincentian Marian Youth Encounter at the Shrine Church in Perryville, Mo., will be Feb. 10. The evening will start with a five-minute Faith Alive at 6 p.m. A Mass featuring contemporary Christian music follows, with the Rev. Rickey Valleroy as the main celebrant. The evening will conclude with food, fun, sharing and laughter. This VMY free event is geared for teens and young adults, but all ages are welcome to come.

Wellness screening held after church

Dr. Chris Charlton, a Scott City chiropractor, will provide a blood pressure and wellness screening at 12:15 p.m. Feb. 10 at Father's Arms Fellowship. Charlton invites everyone to bring any health questions to him starting at 12:15 p.m., until everyone is done. Some healthy snacks will be provided if there is a long line. Sikeston church in revival this week

The Church of God in Christ Inc., Missouri Southeast, Third Jurisdiction, will be in revival at 7 p.m. each night Feb. 5 through 8 at Greene Memorial Church of God in Christ, 113 Clayton St., Sikeston, Mo. The international motto is "All About Souls," and the theme of the revival is "Seven Major Models," based on Romans 3:23 and Matthew 1:21. For information, call 573-417-3471.

Christian Science Web site now available

The First Church of Christ, Scientist announced the launch of www.christianscience.com. At the heart of this new Web site is a collection of video clips in which people share their personal experiences in Christian Science. The public will hear firsthand accounts of people who are living Christian Science and how their prayers have healed them and others. The Web site will explain why Christian Scientists choose to rely on prayer for healing, that Christian Science is not Scientology, and that Christian Science is a Christian, Bible-based religion, not a cult. The Christian Science branch church in Cape Girardeau is at 215 N. West End Blvd.

Renew conference this week at Calvary United

Calvary United Pentecostal Church will hold a renew conference at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday at 581 Broadridge Drive in Jackson. Senior pastor Charles Carr of West Point United Pentecostal Church in Doniphan, Mo., will speak.

Stonecroft Bible series begins sessions

Stonecroft Bible studies are relaxed, small-group, informal settings open to all. Several sessions are available. Jean Petzoldt will offer the session "Prayer" on Monday mornings. At the Jackson Senior Center, Ruth Maevers and Pat Hill are guiding the study "1 John." Maevers and Joan Battle lead a Wednesday morning group studying Philippians. Ron Hitt guides a group of men and women as they study Psalms on Tuesday evening, and Fritz Sander guides a men's group during the lunch break studying Genesis. Mary Ann Depeder has an ongoing study at Heartland Care and Rehab, and there are ongoing studies at the Cape County Jail. Other groups are forming. First Baptist members gather for Souper Bowl

Pastor Mike Shupert will deliver the third sermon in the "Jesus Did What?" series titled John 5: The Healing at the Pool at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. Lenten services begin Feb. 6 this year

Lent begins this year with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 6. Among the churches offering special services are:

  • First Presbyterian Church at Broadway and Lorimier Street will have a Wednesday evening Lenten series titled "The Places of Passion." After a light supper of chili and vegetable soup, pimiento sandwiches, brownies and ice cream at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, the group will gather in the Upper Room for a meditation, "The Streets of Jerusalem," led by the Rev. Paul Kabo.
  • Centenary United Methodist Church Ash Wednesday service is at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary.
  • A meal will be served at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville. A Lenten service will follow at 7 p.m., with open communion.

Methodist churches share Lenten services

United Methodist churches in and around Cape Girardeau will gather for worship Bbginning at 7 p.m., Feb. 10 and continuing through March 9. A different congregation will host each week, with the message brought by a variety of preachers and music provided by a variety of church choirs and/or music praise teams.

  • On Feb. 10, the Rev. Scott Moon of Grace United Method Church will preach at La Croix United Methodist Church. The La Croix Praise Team will provide music.
  • Feb. 17, the Rev. Sarah Hamilton, pastor at Advance, Mo.,will preach at Zion United Methodist Church at Gordonville, with the Grace Chancel choir providing music.
  • Feb. 24, the Rev. Barry Winders of Wesley United Methodist Church in Fruitland will preach at Perryville United Methodist Church, with the New McKendree choir providing music.
  • March 2, the Rev. Jeff Long of Centenary United Methodist Church will preach at Advance United Methodist Church, with music by the Maple United Methodist Church choir.
  • March 9, the Rev. David Norbury, Southeast district superintendent, will preach at Maple United Methodist Church with the Zion United Methodist Church choir singing.

Bethany Baptist has Super Sunday

The Rev. Dr. Shawn Wasson, pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, will lead a "Super Worship Service" at 4 p.m. Sunday. The regular evening service will be canceled. Members are asked to encourage their friends and neighbors to gather for fellowship and football in their individual residences that evening.
