Football

  • Flag football league: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a youth flag football league for boys ages 5 to 14. Registration will run until Aug. 21 at the A.C. Brase Arena between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Age groups will be 5- and 6-year olds, 7- and 8-year olds, 9- to 11-year olds and 12- to 14-year olds. Cost: $50. Info: Chris Eastridge, 334-2523.
  • Adult flag football: Registration is open for the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department's 11th annual adult flag football league. The league will be comprised of teams in three divisions, and games will be played at Arena Park fields 10 and 11. It will run seven or eight weeks, with teams playing a total of eight regular-season games. Teams will have seven roster spots.   • Youth football: The Jackson Area Youth Football fall signups will take place Saturday and Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at the football complex. Golf

  • Men's individual tournament: The Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course will host the Cape Girardeau Parks Foundation Men's Individual golf tournament Aug. 23. It will be a 27-hole event with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The tournament will be flighted after 18 holes, and the last nine holes will be played within each flight. Entry forms are available at the A.C. Brase Arena and Cape Jaycee Municipal Golf Course. Deadline: Aug. 18. Cost: $65, which includes the cart fee. Info: Jared Tanz, 334-2031.

High school tryouts

  • Central: All fall sports tryouts begin Monday, and athletes must have a completed physical and health insurance information to try out. Football will try out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at the high school. Players should arrive early Monday for equipment. Volleyball will try out Monday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. then from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday from 6 to 7:15 a.m. then from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m.; Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m. Athletes should bring two pairs of tennis shoes. Tryouts will be held in the small gym. Softball will try out Monday and Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 a.m. then 3:30 to 6 p.m., and Wednesday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Cross country will hold tryouts Monday through Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the junior high track. There also is an optional workout at midnight Monday, and athletes should arrive around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to get checked in. Boys swimming will try out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 to 8 a.m., then Thursday and Friday from 3 to 5:15 p.m. at the Central pool at the junior high. Girls tennis will try out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. at the high school tennis courts. Boys soccer will try out Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 to 10 a.m. then from 6 to 8 p.m.

  • 2008 Corporate Games: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will host the 2008 Corporate Games from Sept. 14 to 26. The Games will consist of diverse team events to encourage participation from individuals of all interests and abilities. Cost: $350 for Division 1 (100 employees or more); $300 for Division 2 (26 to 99 employees); $250 for Division 3 (25 or fewer employees). Entry forms can be picked up at the A.C.   • League registration open: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department is accepting teams for the 2008 men's and co-ed fall softball league. There will be an upper division doubleheader men's league on Friday nights. Teams will be able to use ASA and NSA approved bats on Friday nights only. Deadline: Aug. 29. Triathlon

  • Trail of Tears Triathlon: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the 19th annual Trail of Tears Triathlon on Sept. 13 at Trail of Tears State Park. The race will consist of a half-mile swim, 15-mile bike ride and 4-mile run. Cost: $35 for individuals, $40 for team if registered by Sept. 1; $45 for individuals, $50 for team after Sept. 1. Day of registration will be an additional $5. All non-UTSA members will be required to purchase a one-day membership for $10.   • Youth triathlon: The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor the 20th annual youth triathlon and kids races at the Central Municipal Pool on Saturday. Pre-registration ends Friday at 5 p.m. Registration on the day of the event runs from 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. The kids half-mile run starts at 8:30 a.m. and is for ages 3 to 5 years old. The 1-mile run will begin at approximately 8:45 a.m. and is for ages 6 to 8 years old. The triathlon will begin at approximately 9 a.m. and is open to competitors ages 8 to 18. The course consists of a 300-yard swim, 4-mile bike course and 1-mile run. Cost: If pre-registered: $15 for individual in youth triathlon, $30 for a team, $8 for kids half-mile run.
