Every successful endeavor is the product of the many hands that help make it so. Very often, these hands are never seen by the masses, but they do what we often call the little things that make the more obvious things work. The United Way of Southeast Missouri recognizes that its accomplishments have been aided by various people and organizations, and on May 28, it honored them at its annual luncheon at Isle Casino Cape Girardeau.

Capt. Ronnie Amick of the Salvation Army spoke to the crowd of more than 100 about this year's theme, "Turning Compassion Into Action." He focused on reaching out to others, listening to their needs, and making a difference. The United Way then bestowed specific awards on those who, like others, have supported the organization, but have also gone "above and beyond."

Congratulations to Jay Wolz for the Spirit of Giving Award, Montgomery Bank for the Spirit of Community Award and the Cape Girardeau Public Library, recipient of the Spirit of Caring Award. Their commitment to service has been an integral part of the United Way's success. The United Way's fundraising campaign helped raise nearly $950,000 last year, which helped serve 21,000 people.

According to the mission statement on its website, "The United Way of Southeast Missouri serves as the leader in uniting people and resources to build a stronger and healthier community." This lofty goal requires hands, as well as hearts. It requires turning compassion into action. The United Way relies on constituents to embrace that principle, which enables the organization to continue making a difference in the community. Please consider playing a part.

In appreciation for the part that former executive director Nancy Jernigan has played, Donna Denson, vice president of the United Way board of directors, recognized Jernigan's 20 years of service to the organization. We, too, thank Jernigan, as well as all the organization's supporters and award winners, for helping to make the local United Way the success it remains.
