It can be accurately said that folks in the Cape Girardeau area are God-fearing and church-going souls. Just look at the booming churches that involve thousands of individuals.
And look at the Salvation Army, a religious organization that turns virtually every dollar it raises and every activity it engages in into some sort of program to help others, particularly those who somehow can't get help anywhere else.
To fund the Salvation Army's annual projects, it relies heavily on the Tree of Lights campaign. Generous donors give a few coins at a time at the many kettles at various retail locations. Others send checks to P.O. Box 802, Cape Girardeau, Mo. 63702. Still others donate frozen turkeys to be used for holiday meals. And many other churches organize canned food drives to stock the Salvation Army's pantry shelves.
This year, the Tree of Lights goal is an ambitious $200,000, making it one of the largest fund-raising activities in the area. But that's what it takes to keep the many Salvation Army programs going.
If you can, show your support for the Tree of Lights campaign. If there are other ways you would like to help, call the Salvation Army at 335-7000.
