To the editor:
Why bring Hollywood to Cape Girardeau or build a glass tunnel under the river (the river is so muddy you couldn't see out of it) when we have a perfect tourist attraction right in our back yard?
The passenger train in Jackson would be a great attraction if only we would capitalize on it. But a tourist operation needs support. The steam engine is out of service. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't care. There is quite a number of volunteers who help out, but the railroad can't operate too well with the ridership it has. If we would ride the train once a year or donate the price of a ticket, it would be able to fix up its equipment and tracks.
There are many tourist railroads in the middle of nowhere that bring in thousands of visitors a year.
