To the editor:
The red and blue have become increasingly vivid with division over the past week. With Republicans patting themselves on the back with countless, obvious and downright despicable pieces of legislation, and Democrats shouting in uproar to deaf ears, the separation of values has become progressively clearer.
On July 26, Senate Republicans made it crystal clear what their top priority for America was: helping their gun-friendly lobbyists, fattening their wallets and putting national security in the backdrop. With putting a $491 billion defense bill behind an arbitrary NRA protection plan, Republicans are back-stepping their homeland security rhetoric and are showing their true motivation.
The gun liability bill would disallow lawsuits against firearm producers that resulted in "unlawful use of a firearm or ammunition," according to CNN. The move by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to put the national defense bill, which included debates over the torture of detainees, the allocation of funds to certain departments and the closing of military bases, in the background demonstrates that the Republicans and the president care more about helping their buddies to increase their bank accounts than continuing on their campaign of deception.
I can only hope that with an increasing need for more defense measures, particularly in the wake of recent attacks in London, more people will become aware of the need to put greed and self-indulgence away and replace it with honesty and integrity. The only color that runs our country now is green.
