To the editor:
In the aftermath of Tuesday evening's debate on riverboat gambling at the Show Me Center, I find that there are two issues that are troubling me.
The first issue concerns the two proponents of riverboat gambling present on the panel. They both have been hired by the industry - one as an employee of the Alton, Ill., gambling boat, and the other, as an employee of the Boyd Group in Las Vegas. These two people have absolutely no interest in our city, except financial gain for themselves and their industry. Where are the business leaders in Cape Girardeau who are in favor of the referendum, and why won't they stand up and let us know what's on their minds?
However, Dr. Nessan and Dr. Martin are citizens of our community, both with high moral character and a willingness to speak up for what they believe in and "take the heat" for defending their beliefs and ideals. They both have families in the community and have long-term interests in Cape Girardeau. Obviously, both men care deeply about the character of our city, and I salute them for having the courage to say so.
The second issue that troubles me is that during the debate the two persons from the gambling industry continually reminded us that riverboat gambling is here to stay whether we like it or not, that nearly every town along the Mississippi River will have a gambling boat, so we may as well get used to it. Well, I was always told by my parents that "just because everyone else is doing it doesn't necessarily make it right." The citizens of Cape Girardeau don't have to do what everyone else is doing.
We have a uniquely beautiful and pleasant city - let's keep it that way and vote "NO" on riverboat gambling.
