Dear Editor:
Yes, after 215 years, this country still has those creative, working citizens that made our United States of America. I do not, and will not believe that trophies, ribbons, or money are the motivating factors for success in this, or any other country on this earth. My family, like most others that grew during and immediately following the depression years of the thirties had, and in spite of poverty and occasional hunger, maintained the only true and lasting asset of our American citizens, PRIDE: There is no other factor that can motivate to dedicated effort, growth, and success. Our accumulation of money may be eroded by increased taxes, failing investments, personal catastrophe, but the pride of our citizens has always set us apart from the other nations of the world.
While watching the testimony of Professor Hill and Judge Thomas last evening, I tried to identify this quality of pride in each witness. I could not identify an attitude of strength and pride in Professor Hill, but only a self serving attack on an outstanding civil servant, in hopes of personal gain. I became excited and thrilled as Judge Thomas looked directly into the eyes of the Senators, and the people of the United States, and challenged those men with the authority to confirm his appointment. Personal gain be damned, this is a man with the pride and the strength of those that have made ours the finest country in the world.
If you wish, you may follow Anita Hill; I'll go down the road with Judge Clarence Thomas.
Proudly,
Charles Weber
