Thank you

This has been a year that has tested the limits of donations to various programs that perennially rely on the generosity of others. The good news is that Americans have responded once again to the genuine needs of a disaster-ravaged nation and of worthwhile community organizations.

The threat of donor shock has been dissipated for the most part. Particularly in Southeast Missouri, the response to pleas for support has been extraordinary.

Now it is time to say thank you.

Two of the community projects closest to the heart of the Southeast Missourian are Christmas for the Elderly and Toybox. When it looked like appeals for donations were flagging, area residents, businesses and volunteer organizations stepped forward to make this Christmas brighter for hundreds of our neighbors in need.

There were many other efforts by charitable organizations that received similar support, and they too are grateful for the positive response from the community.

Along with the special fund-raising efforts of the Christmas season comes the prospect that this will be a truly bright year for the United Way's annual campaign, which set an ambitious million-dollar-plus goal. Final results will be announced soon. This is yet another indication of how seriously Southeast Missourians take the challenge to help when help is needed.

It would be impossible to thank everyone personally who supported good causes this year. So let this be a genuine and heart-felt thank you to all of you. May your Christmas be blessed and joyous, and may you look forward to a new year with hope.
