Students practice what they preach

In February the students at Notre Dame Regional High School had a chance to gain experience. It wasn't an internship or something to build a resume, but during the Franciscan Service Week 10 students along with two adults helped local organizations help others.

This is an annual effort in which the students collaborate with other students outside the region. Students from St. Francis Prep in Queens, N.Y., and St. Anthony's on Long Island had planned to participate. Inclement weather prevented their travel, but the Notre Dame students carried on.

Whether it was stuffing envelopes and painting a room for Birthright, an interdenominational service that offers alternatives to abortion, or boxing food for the Southeast Missouri Food Pantry, the students learned the importance of practicing the faith.

They realized that any number of individuals could face the challenges of poverty. Along the way, they had fun and enjoyed the camaraderie with friends.

To the students and adults who participated, well done.

We know there are other students and groups who also do good work. The Notre Dame group is an example, but we appreciate each of you.

As Christians, others look to us to see how our faith affects the way we live. Helping others, as did these individuals from Notre Dame, sends a positive message to the world. A message of hope. Of compassion. Of love.
