When talk turns to heated competition among schools, the topic is typically sports. But not always. The Cape Girardeau Central High School Marching Band proved this year that hard work can pay off in statewide recognition. The band gave the school and the region something to roar about in 1994.
The marching band earned three first-place honors, a second place award and two third-place finishes in the six competitions this year. In other words, the marching band placed in every competition this year. This achievement didn't just happen. Just as the sports teams began practicing before the start of classes, so could band members be found marching on the practice field. Students spent hours and hours preparing and practicing. Director Ron Nall said the band worked hard on discipline both on and off the field.
The competition tested students talents and endurance. The final performance in Warrensburg was completed in a downpour.
Another crucial element to the marching band's continued success is a dedicated group of band parents, who work hard to make road trips and home games run smoothly. Parental support is key in every aspect of student success, both in and out of the classroom.
The band members, directors and parents are justifiably proud of their accomplishments this year. That pride is shared by the high school and the region. We congratulate the marching Tigers on a job well done.
