When you think about people who make a difference in the community, Majors Ben and Beth Stillwell belong in the conversation. The couple has served in the Salvation Army for 28 years, the last six in Cape Girardeau. Later this month they will embark on a new challenge when they transfer to Marshalltown, Iowa.
The Stillwells, with their compassionate hearts and willingness to serve, have stayed longer in Cape Girardeau than the Salvation Army normally keeps personnel in one area. Time of service in one location averages three years, seven months. With the couple's extended time here, they have continued to do important work and build relationships.
The Salvation Army plays an important role helping people in need, providing physical and spiritual guidance. In addition to the worship center, the organization helps feed the hungry and offers other services to those who don't know where to turn for help.
In Sunday's Southeast Missourian, the Stillwells shared their testimony of faith in God and the calling they felt to join the Salvation Army.
They had wonderful things to say about this community and its generosity. Major Beth Stillwell succinctly captured the organization's mission. "We want to clean people up, we want to feed people and we want to present the gospel to them," she said.
Ronnie and Bridgette Amick soon will move to Cape Girardeau to lead the center. We look forward to welcoming the couple.
The Stillwells' last Sunday service in Cape Girardeau will be June 23. We offer our thanks to Majors Ben and Beth and pray for continued blessings on their life and ministry in Iowa.
