SPEAK OUT READERS, give this some thought and response: Progress is only the human propensity for complicating simplicity, and politics is only a tool for obtaining self-satisfaction and greedy wants.
THIS IS A response to the white, heterosexual, Christian lady who called in a lengthy item to Speak Out. It's refreshing to hear someone that calls herself a Christian preach tolerance in the Speak Out column. I only have one suggestion for her: I think she should consider giving up cigarettes because we need people like her to stay around as long as possible. Thank you.
I AM CALLING about the religious chain letters that are being sent. I thought it was against the law to do that. I know there will be death in my family some day and the money I get or lose will be my own doing. I have a friend who received one also, and I want you to know we are both breaking your chain letter. Thank you.
WHAT A BIG JOKE we have over at Cape Central. I guess next year Gary Lynch will want to be principal. Thank you.
THIS MORNING I heard Paul Harvey tell of all the good things that our vice president has done. He said that it's the other side of the story and most people don't know these things. I wish the Missourian could print some of the good things that he has accomplished.
I, LIKE MANY other parents, was put out about the fact that Linda Godwin was at Cape Central High School and my daughter, who attends school there, was not allowed to be one of the few students who saw her. The administration claims they didn't have enough notice. Well, how much notice do you need to make an announcement to be in the gym at a certain time to see a world-acclaimed celebrity? Why don't you just admit you didn't really have the situation in control? I teach at a neighboring school. All of our students saw her as well as citizens out in the community. The more I find out about Cape schools, the less I like them. It's no wonder when people have a choice between Cape and Jackson schools, they move to Jackson.
DOESN'T IT SOUND awful funny that Gary Lynch is now the head coach for Central football and Jim Anderson was let go? I wonder why. I wonder what other surprises we're going to see, considering he let Coach Wadlington go.
IN RESPONSE TO Bill Heitland's column on Central's coaching carousel, I for one am happy they finally dusted it off. I hope it keeps moving until the Central football and basketball programs get out of the doldrums. Bill, I believe if you had interviewed the athletes that played for Coach Anderson you would know why he resigned. Gary Lynch is a proven winner, so best regards to Gary. The basketball program needed a revival. When this happens the first to go is the coach. With only 200 to 300 people attending the games, it is time for a change. It's embarrassing when Jackson has more people in the Orange Bowl for their game than Central. Maybe a new out-of-town coach can't change things but I for one think it's worth a try. Come on, Heitland, let's start looking at the positive future and forget the negative past. Thank you.
TO BILL HEITLAND, sports editor: Your Sunday article on the Central High School coaching carousel omits the consideration of hiring a new athletic director from outside of the district. There are numerous qualified candidates who could eventually bring new policy and effective evaluation criteria to the athletic department. As you state in your article, Bill, if you're not from the area you run a risk of becoming a political figure. A new, outside A.D. would bring fresh, new opportunities to students who are not legacies of former Central players and are passed by on athletic teams due to their geographic or family backgrounds. Promoting within the system may seem like the acceptable solution, but not everyone shares your feelings on the matter.
