Blondie in Cape?

I'VE BEEN reading with interest the comic strip "Blondie" in the Southeast Missourian and watching for problems in trying to get her permits to remodel a building for her catering service. In reading that, her problems remind me a lot of the problems that we have with city hall in Cape Girardeau trying to get building permits for things in Cape.

Education message

I'M A school teacher and a Republican, and I have a message for Peter Kinder: Before you try to get elected as governor by playing demagogue and trashing public education, take a look at what happened to the like-minded Republican candidate for governor in Kentucky.

Democrat comeback

I WOULD say that the Democratic victories in Kentucky and Virginia are an opening. And I would say to the people are a little unhappy with the Republican Congress: We're on the road to victory, and in the 1996 election I think we'll take back the Congress.

Indians are coming

I WANT to tell everyone the best kept secret in town is the SEMO basketball Indians. Watch out for them.

Drugs in school

I WANT to commend Dr. Tallent and the Cape public schools on the aggressive approach to students' drug problems. Apparently the other schools in this area are taking a head-in-the-sand approach, or do they really feel they have no drug problem? They do their straight students a disservice by their look-the-other-way approach.

Check Jackson too

MY DAUGHTER, who is a senior at Jackson High School, stated to me that the same drug investigation carried out at Central High School, which resulted in felony charges against a student, should be conducted at Jackson also. Drugs are there. Jackson, unfortunately, is not the Utopia that we as residents would like to think. We must get drugs out of our schools.

Spending too much

A NEW library would be wonderful. Four years ago I would have voted yes without hesitation. The reason Jackson voters rejected the new library was because of the Jackson mayor and his councilmen spending unbelievable amounts of money to redecorate a 5-year-old redecorated building. How can they justify taxing us when they are spending like there is no tomorrow?

Students and trash

I SURE wish the administrators at Cape Central High and Junior High would close the lunch hour because of all the trash that is thrown all over the street. These kids need to be taught how to place their litter in the trash cans. I hope the school board takes this into consideration.

Veterans saluted

A GREAT thanks to Central High School. Thanks to Julia Jorgenson, teacher, and all those who helped, especially students, to put together their fine salute to veterans. As a POW/MIA flag reads, we veterans were not forgotten by this group of students. I think we veterans forgot them as veteran attendance could have been much better. Also, thanks to the Southeast Missourian and KFVS-TV for their coverage. As a reminder, you can attend the J.C. Schultz School presentation at 7:40 a.m. Nov. 13 at the flagpole in front of Schultz School.

A fine tribute

KUDOS TO Cape Central High's Julia House Jorgenson and Cape Central Renaissance for their tribute to veterans. An excellent program, both music and narration. Only a handful of the public was there, but many high school students were. Hopefully those students came away with a greater appreciation of the price that has been paid for the good life that they live today.
