Lack of morality
WHILE IT is not for government to prescribe morality, a government without a moral base fosters a citizenry without responsibility and a nation void of stability. It is no wonder under our government's current mindset individual responsibility is disappearing. While the government intrudes into so many facets of our lives where it has no business, it fails to meet its most basic responsibilities. Our fundamental freedom from physical harm is no longer protected. Today our taxes have become the price we pay to support people who deny our civilization. As the government has grown, our civilization has declined.
Southside traffic
I HAVE a complaint. All of us who live on the south end of town have to drive 10 blocks out of our way to get to town. I live on South West End Boulevard. It is ridiculous that they have the boulevard completely closed off. It is ridiculous they have all streets blocked off. I have to take the highway into town, a good two miles out of my way. This is ridiculous. Something should be done and done immediately.
Flag memorial
BEAUTIFUL WAS the sight of the 76 flags of deceased veterans flying at the memorial to veterans of all wars at Brookside Park in Jackson. VFW Post 10495 and the Drury, sponsors of the memorial, are responsible for presenting, making and erecting the flags. We thank you members who volunteered.
Don't cut Medicare
TO THE politicians who want to cut Medicare to save money. Cut your own retirement fund. Do not cut the taxes on the rich. Cut out foreign aid. That would save billions.
Air-mail letter
DEAR CHINA, Keep Hillary. Love, U.S.A.
Today's cool homes
I HATE to disagree with Mark Powers on the situation with air conditioning. But years ago, most people did not have air conditioning in their homes. Now, most people do have air conditioning in their homes. The students get use to having air in their homes. To sit for seven hours with no air conditioning is very uncomfortable and does not lead to a good study environment. Yes, the kids play outside, but they are able to go inside, drink water and cool off. They are not out there in that sun for seven hours day in and day out like they are at school. Air conditioning is needed in the schools we presently have because the students are not use to being without air conditioning.
Mona Charen's column
I REALLY appreciate the Sept. 6 column by Mona Charen. This is the type of journalism our country needs to make informed, agreeable, realistic decisions for the betterment of our society. If our country's idealism is to be a liberal for liberal sake, where does this put truth? All of the major religions uphold high moral standards of truth with strict warnings against denial of them. Jesus was the greatest liberal ever, yet very few liberals believe in the ideals he taught.
Mark Powers' columns
THE RECENT columns written by Mark Powers are really great. The one written Wednesday about school and air conditioning -- that one should be framed.
Another Cal?
