I DON'T usually agree with columnist Ellen Goodman, but Jan. 23 her column conveys my feelings exactly. We are sick and tired of hearing O.J. Simpson's trial. There are a lot of other programs we want to see on TV. O.J. is not any more important than any other murder trial, and they don't follow every detail of every other trial on TV...

Goodman is right

Flag not a tablecloth

I AM a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. On the KFVS news at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23 they showed the American flag being used as a tablecloth for the people who were collecting funds for the Japanese earthquake at the university. I think this is really inappropriate and it should not be done. Our flag should not be a tablecloth.

Who gets disability?

MY WIFE has cancer of the colon. She had to have her colon taken out, she had a nervous breakdown and she's got some other diseases right along with it, but she cannot get on Social Security disability because they say she's able to work. I know another guy who got on Social Security disability because he's an alcoholic. I can't understand how they can do that. This guy's never worked a day in his life, and he got Social Security disability because he's alcoholic. To me alcoholism is not a disease. Alcoholics can be helped if they lay off the bottle.

Sports show

I'M CALLING just to let everybody know how disappointed I was in the sports show that was put on at the Show Me Center this past weekend. It was one of the worst I believe I've ever been to.

Colors for Rams

I FEEL the St. Louis Rams should return to its winning colors of navy blue and white, which it had when the Rams moved to Los Angeles from Cleveland. Upon moving to Anaheim, the losing colors of blue and gold were adopted. To start off in a new winning tradition, the older Ram colors should be returned. It might be noted that blue and gold are California's state colors.

Nasal treatment

THIS CALL is in no way meant to take away any of the praise for Dr. Richard Martin's method of chronic sinus treatment. It is simply to recognize the now-deceased Dr. W.A. Thomas, a eye, ear, nose and throat osteopathic physician and surgeon, who had his office over Esicar's Market in the 300 block of Broadway some 50 years ago. He very successfully treated chronic sinus conditions using by irrigating the sinus cavities. He laughingly called it a nasal douche.

Positive sportsmanship

I AM a Central Tiger basketball fan. At the game against Notre Dame, some Central fans were chanting at the referees. There was even a Central fan shouting obscenities at the refs. Is this showing good sportsmanship? Let's support the Tigers with positive cheers and exhibit good sportsmanship at all times. Our team is having an outstanding season. Let's also be positive with our support as fans.

Abortion thoughts

I HAVE never been for abortion, nor have I ever been against it. I watched the news and saw the sign saying 1,600,000 babies were aborted in 1994. I do not say this is not true, nor do I say that it is right. But with 1 million also born that are going to live, I would like to know what this country would do in a few years with that kind of births allowed to exist in America? We don't have jobs for nearly 7 million people now. And no place for these babies who would be born and the mothers would not want them. There's no way out other than to keep it legal.

Supports smoking ban

I'M VERY appreciative that West Park Mall officials have made the decision to ban smoking. Discrimination against smokers is not an issue at all, for it has been proven it is unhealthy for everyone, smokers and non-smokers. If smokers choose to hurt themselves, they have no right to hurt other people with their smoke. Cheers to West Park Mall for helping all of us, smokers and non-smokers.

Supports public radio

THE SOUTHERN Republican Congress wants to destroy public radio. Here in Southeast Missouri, KRCU brings us the fine arts, culture and news. Public radio and TV are the only quality connections to our cultural traditions and world news. The Republican support of corporate welfare combined with their attack on public broadcasting is more evidence that their Contract With America is a lurch to breed an anti-intellectual mediocrity.

Lucky Blue Springs

HOW LUCKY is Blue Springs to have a mayor who looks out for the interests and welfare and concern of the citizens in their town. Good job to him.

Rent movie, read book

NEWT GINGRICH'S advice to Mrs. Clinton was to go to the video store and rent "Boy's Town." My advice to him is go to rent "The Grapes of Wrath" or read the book by Studs Terkel, "Hard Times." The rest of you right-wingers too, you ought to go look at the movie and read that book. It might give you more insight. There's more to being a liberal than what you think.
