Liberal definition

A LIBERAL is someone who is so understanding that he can't understand anyone who is not as understanding as he is.

Presidential golf balls

A COMPANY now makes Bill Clinton golf balls. They appear to be going down the right or center of the fairway, but if you look away, they curve to the far left. They always have a great lie, they have an empty core and superficial coating on the outside. They are hard to find on the course since they always change to the color or colors around them. They are able to skirt trouble using slick coating, but they have trouble of staying away from skirts. Occasionally they stray off into beds of flowers.

Knowing right from wrong

THIS IS in response to the person complaining about the pamphlet being placed on their windshields. In defense of SEMO Lifesavers, the pro-life group that sponsored the prayer vigil, I will assure you that we are well aware of the law against distributing information in this manner and that no one in our organization had anything to do this. It is a very sick country that has a law against placing literature to protect its citizens from unwanted aggravation but gives zero protection to its tiniest citizens, babies in the womb, making it legal to kill them for any reason, at any time, up until the day of birth. Paper on windshields. Babies in the womb. Think about it. This is a prime example of how we respond to laws. If it is legal to do something, then it must be right. If it is illegal to do something, then it must be wrong. Wake up, America. Think for yourself. We don't need Supreme Court justices to tell us we know the difference between right and wrong.

Botanical garden

THE IDEA for making the St. Vincent Seminary grounds into a botanical garden like they have in St. Louis is an excellent idea. I hope the Colonial Cape Girardeau Foundation will pick up on this and actually do some good to help the rest of the community.

Phone slamming warning

PUBLIC, BEWARE. Phone slamming is frequent. Phone slamming is changing your long-distance phone company to other companies without your knowledge or consent. These companies charge 50-60 cents per minute. Don't overlook the fine print which contains information authorizing the switch by your signature on a contest entry or by endorsing a check sent to you as a contest prize. There have been cases of a long-distance phone service soliciting you and switching you without your consent. Examine your phone bill carefully for names of strange long-distance companies. You may not recognize them on your phone bill because their names are deceptive. You may just think it is part of your bill. To prevent this switching, you should ask your local phone company for a deep freeze restriction letter. It notes your choice of long distance carrier and prevents it from being switched without your authorization by signature to your local phone company.

What's Dole's stand?

IS SENATOR Dole pro-choice or pro-life? I am very confused about this. We know what Clinton stands for but what does Sen. Dole stand for?

Hear the Tiger roar

I HAVE a psychic prediction concerning the University of Missouri football team. I believe they could go 11-0. The only thing they'd have to do is join the OVC.

Living with mistakes

HAVE YOU ever made a mistake so bad it would haunt you for the rest of your life? This is what happened to a young friend of mine. He did something very stupid when he was just 21 years old. He had been drinking, and he chose to drive his car. He had an accident that resulted in the death of a young girl. He spent two years in jail while recovering from his own serious injuries. Since the accident, a day hasn't passed that he hasn't thought about what happened and regretted it. That would be enough to destroy most people as sensitive and caring as this young man, but he has continued to live up to his responsibilities and do the best he can. He has been very careful not to drive after drinking. Last year, he drank some beer while shoeing some horses. He quit early in the afternoon. Sometime after midnight, he got a call from a friend who had been drinking and needed a ride. Since he thought the beer was out of his system and he didn't want his friend to drive, he picked him up. The police stopped him for having a dim headlight and ended up charging him with driving under the influence. Since that happened, there's been at least two articles in the Missourian making him sound like some kind of a monster. Those of us who are acquainted with him know him to be a very sensitive and caring individual. I know the lives of the young girl's family was shattered when she was killed, but I pray that Johnny's life will not be shattered and he will not be made to pay for a horrible mistake for the rest of his life.

Employment figures

I NOTICE in Saturday's paper that unemployment is at a seven-year low. How many good Cape Republicans are going to call in and claim responsibility for that? I'll never believe it.

Puzzled about teachers

PRESIDENT CLINTON'S plan to recruit thousands of volunteers to teach the children to read puzzled me in two ways. Was he saying the teachers can't teach reading or that they just don't or won't teach reading? Also I was astonished at the way the teachers in the audience soundly applauded this stinging rebuke.

The world around us

IT MAY come as a shock or a small surprise, but very few people really care about what's going on in the world around them. We who are not in politics live in our own little world and are gradually influenced by those who are in politics. All we do is bitch a bit and adjust while others knock themselves plumb out. Ambition is greed. Greed is merely ambition. It's relaxing not to be ambitious, while uptight folks who are ambitious and greedy die of heart attacks and strokes. I feel like I'm getting ahead if I have food, clothing and shelter and my kids have the same. Oh, but I do prefer a Cadillac. It's easier on my back.

Time for a change

HAS SOCIETY gotten so greedy or lazy that the innocence of children no longer matters to someone committing a sex crime or, watching a sex crime being committed, can just walk away without being prosecuted only to do it over and over again? I, for one, care. People, wake up. It's time for change.

Good Samaritans

THANKS TO the three gentleman who helped us in our time of need with our tire at Winks on Sept. 5. It's great to know that there are still some good people in this world. God bless you.

Ready for debate KO

I HAVE to laugh every time I read a comment from a Republican. I can't believe that there are that many gullible people out there now that the Dole campaign has been reduced to the point of grasping at straws. The personal attack strategy wore out. So then they tried the military thing. Well that blew up in their face. Then it was drugs, but who was really responsible for the crack-cocaine problem? Reagan-Bush. As far as crime, who gave the automatic weapons to the gangs for Iran/Contra funds? Reagan-Bush. Let's face it, Republicans, your finger pointing and whining tactics aren't cutting it. I think the president is looking forward to the debate. There's no way Dole can go toe-to-toe with Bill Clinton. I'm looking for a KO.
