Put the people before the party

SECRETARY OF State Bekki Cook hopes the way she presided over the Speaker of the House election won't be an issue to the voters in November. Well, it should be a major issue because the Secretary of State's most important function is to insure that elections are both fair and impartial. But Mrs. Cook put party before people and failed miserably in conducting her first election.

How about a Whitewater rally?

SINCE BILL and Hillary Clinton are coming to Southeast Missouri to campaign, I'm wondering why they don't hold their rally in Whitewater.

No more apples

I WOULD just like to comment on some of the driving conditions today. Two times, I had an 18-wheeler start to move right into me, and if I hadn't stopped and gotten out of the way, it would have resulted in a terrible accident. I'm an older person and I watch for these kinds of things. Okay, I'm getting all 18-wheelers a warning, you've gotten by with it two times. Next time, I'm not getting out of your way and I'm not going to give you an apple. I'd like to give you a rotten apple right where you need it.

Cover up Rush

WITH OUR President Clinton coming to town I hope they show him respect and the city covers up the pitiful, stupid picture of Rush Limbaugh on the river wall. It's a total embarrassment.

Wants jury duty

I WOULD like to know how somebody gets on the list to become a juror. I would very much like to become a juror. I'm a retired person and have the time to serve and would serve if I were called. I was just wondering if anybody knows how you go about getting on the list to be a juror.

Another Emerson supporter

EMILY FIREBAUGH does not deserve to go to Washington as a Democrat. She should be honest with everyone, admit she was a supporter of Bill Emerson's for years.

Blowing smoke

PRESIDENT CLINTON is blowing smoke, pardon the pun. He's covering up by having tobacco in the limelight but the illegal drug use is up. This is just another example of our freedoms being taken away.

What about improvements?

ATTENTION JACKSON School District Taxpayers. Congratulations for voting the $7.8 million bond issue. However, what happened to the junior high gymnasium improvements that were supposed to be made? Or about the conditions caused by leaky air conditioners in the girls' locker rooms. Why aren't there textbooks for 9th grade English students. And did you know that there are core classes with 32+ students in them because adequate number of teachers couldn't be hired. Yes, taxpayers, I'm excited about my 9th grader receiving an education in an overcrowded, understaffed, deteriorated building. Thanks Dr. Jones and congratulations R-II voters.

Poor sports

CHANNEL 12 has such a pathetic sports coverage on their news, they should just drop out altogether. While all other local channels are giving you sports at 5:20, they bore you with some hospital report. If you want sports news on local TV, channel 12 is so outdated, it's not even funny where you have to wait until 6:20 for their first belated sports report.

Just say no

TO ALL those teen-agers out there who are starting to smoke cigarettes, it doesn't make you look like Joe Cool puffing away, it makes you look like Joe Stupid.

What about Kemp?

IF BY accident, Dole would win the election and if something would happen to him, and at 73 you never know, what kind of president would the ex-football player, Kemp, make? He wasn't a very good football player so think twice before you vote.

Good job Heidi, goodby Marc

JUST WANTED to call in and say that Heidi Nieland is a good writer and she deserves praise but the best writer at the Southeast Missourian just left. Marc Powers deserves high praise. The guy was hilarious and wrote good articles. I'm sad to see him go.
