Women's rights and abortion

SPEAK OUT has turned into nothing but a cheap sermon on abortion. I support women's rights 100 percent, and if my daughter or wife needs one, I am behind them anytime with my checkbook in hand. The conservatives can rave on like loons, but I just throw back in their faces.

Close scrutiny at jail

I JUST have a few choice words about the escaped prisoner from Cape County Jail. When my granddaughter was over there for writing bad checks, she was guarded constantly. When I visited her, they hovered over us. Now why wouldn't they be guarding a killer at all hours of the time? I'd just like to know why.

Tough on Clinton

IT LOOKS like the most liberal newspaper in the Midwest, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, has finally caught with it's fair-haired boy, President Bill Clinton, in such a way that it cannot act an apologist for it anymore. I quote from the editorial June 18, "When people's privacy is being invaded, bureaucratic bumbling is simply not an acceptable explanation. The White House has had little regard for people's privacy. If the confidential files were obtained and held for 2 1/2 years as a result of innocent mistakes, as President Bill Clinton says, he is still accountable. One of the measures of a president is his ability to hire able, conscientious people who can work together to achieve the president's policy goals. Mr. Clinton appears to have failed that test."

More about those snakes

YOU DON'T think I know about snakes. Well here's one. Did you know black snakes slither up trees and swallow baby birds as they are hollering and there's no help or protection their parents can give them? Also a blue racer will chase you, and the only way to get it to stop is to kill it. I know. This happened to me when I was a child, and I know it's a fact. I still say the only good snake is a dead snake. But you know, the real sad part about wanting the snake to live is it's perfectly fine to go and kill an unborn child. I think it's seriously wrong when a snake is protected and an unborn child is not. And may God have mercy on all of us.

Support mural artists

JACKSON'S MURAL contest for a $1,000 prize ends June 24. I am concerned about all the artists who worked so hard and received nothing. It would be worthwhile to check out the exhibits at the Gallery 100. A beautiful picture might be bought for an establishment, private person or billboard.

Scott City raises salary

I SEE in the June 18 edition the Scott City council is at it again. The public works director salary has gone up one more time. Kind of odd that they've got all these other workers in the public works department and police department that are way underpaid, and they're not doing anything at all about that.

Choose your energy carefully

PLEASE STOP the church burnings. Your anger will only hurt you in the end. Man may differ in his opinion as to what is right and what is wrong, but apart from man, the intelligence of the universe decides your lot in this life and what comes after. If you give it some thought, it is so senseless to argue about religion or to argue about anything for that matter. If people would pick up a book and read instead of spending their whole lives practicing retort, arguing and playing mind games, our relationships would reach a whole new dimension. Lately, I've been so upset with mankind for it's evil doings, but I see now he who is giving the opportunity to be a human being may not be so lucky the next time depending on the energy you absorb while you're here. So the next time you act or say something to someone, make sure you are drawing on the right energy to motivate you.

Thanks for considerate help

I JUST wanted to take this opportunity to thank the young security officer, Jimmy, for taking the time to change my flat tire during my visit to Southeast Missouri Hospital. He also assisted me with my niece who was in labor. It's nice to see there are still kind and considerate people out there, and I just wanted to express my appreciation.

Barking dog needs attention

DEAR NEIGHBOR, you can't just get a dog and bring it home and stick it in a cage outside to yap and bark and disturb the neighborhood day and night. That is cruel treatment to your animal and very disturbing to your neighbors. Please make a change.

Access in the county jail

I'D LIKE to know why the trusties had access to a murderer and a rapist at the Cape County Jail. I think the sheriff's department has some tough questions they should be answering to the Cape County Commission. This is a disgrace.

Get a job, off welfare

I'M CALLING about the woman who said our welfare system is so bad. I'm a single mother of two children. I work two jobs to support my children. Why doesn't she get a job?
