Sad to say, the killing of the innocent, the unborn, has Americans going the wrong direction with murder, and some of our Christians are going for it. Hats off to the priest who gave that strong sermon. God bless him. Seems like the Clintons do not know the 10 Commandments or at least the 5th Commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." We should fear and love God that we may not hurt nor harm our neighbor in his body but help and befriend him in every bodily need. And since Clinton is not a God-fearing president, so the suffering of the unborn is like a war when many lives are sacrificed for the freedom of America. So, Lord, have mercy and help us, as America is falling apart, as it does not know what is doing.
IS THE city too cheap to buy sirens to warn us on tornadoes? I think the city is. I think the city doesn't really care about the people living here.
I'M 70 years old, and I'd like to give some of the younger people a history lesson and make a few points. President Clinton has used his airplane and spent millions of dollars to fly a lot of places unnecessary. If that would have happened during the Reagan and Bush administrations, they would have probably both been impeached. As for the economy, the Federal Reserve and the bond market make the economy. When you've got low interest rates, you're going to have a good economy. That's what we're getting into, lower interest rates. But they did raise the interest rates on President Bush when he was running for re-election. President Clinton's administration has had more people quit or be let out because of the problems in the administration. As an example, when President Eisenhower was in office, his secretary of state took a vicuna coat, and Eisenhower was almost let out because of that. The Clinton administration has gone all over the world and given money like a drunken sailor to people. We talk about our Social Security. It could have been straightened out probably a lot for the money he gave around the world. The Republican Congress, they're definitely doing what they were elected to do.
THIS IS the only way I know how to express my anger for what happened the other day at a Scott City grocery store. I have no idea who this elderly man was, but you were the rudest man I ever met in my life. You should be embarrassed and ashamed for your uncalled-for reaction. You not only disrupted the store, you made a total fool of yourself. If you were having a bad day, you should have left your problems at home. You had no reason to be so rude.
TO THE person who called in referring to pro-lifers as anti-choicers. I'd like to inform them that we like our choicers just as much as you like anti-lifers. We, however, know that killing is wrong, no matter how old or young a person is, and God is on our side. Who is on yours? By the way, pro-lifers are the ones who started the crisis centers and the birthrights. They do help these women and children. What have you done?
I WOULD like to know why Cape cannot afford sirens to warn people when there's a tornado approaching. I live in a mobile home park, and there's nowhere for us to go. All the skirting was off the houses and it was a real mess. I mean, we're getting a soccer field, we're getting a new convention center, but we can't have something that's real important that would save probably thousands of lives.
THIS IS a comment to all the people who's been bashing Dennis Rodman. If you haven't seen the interview on Oprah Winfrey, he's really a calm, collected guy. He's just got some problems, and he expresses himself in different ways. Everybody just needs to lay off him and respect him for what he does on the court, not his off-the-court life.
SENSATIONALISM? I don't think there's been nearly enough sensationalism. A child being murdered as it is coming out of the womb should be condemned by every newspaper, television and radio show in the nation. I find it totally shocking that people should seem to be so unconcerned about something as terrible as this. It isn't close to infanticide. It is infanticide. The whole country should be screaming for it to stop. Instead we have comments like "Not all abortions are done this way." So we should not be concerned. I think our country is in a sad state if people let such an atrocity continue. Pray that we wake up and take a stand.
I'D LIKE to applaud the Notre Dame student athletes on their great season again. I think it's amazing that a school can have 25 percent of its enrollment finish in the top 3 percent of the college entrance exams. I would just like to ask if public school parents paid tuition in addition to taxes, do you think their students would perform a little better?
A WORD about the storm damage in Scott City. Scott City Post Office was out of power most of the day, but we still received our mail, even though they could not see well in the dark.
THEY SAY there's a shortage of gas. Well, I'm going to tell you how to save some gas in this country. Look at all these drive-ins. They drive through these convenience stores and the banks, any place there's a drive-in. They'll sit there for five and 10 minutes waiting maybe to buy a soda or do their banking. Just think how much gas that would save if everybody would park their cars or trucks or whatever you drive and go inside and do your business. That would save a lot of gas. I think these drive-ins are the worst thing that this country's ever had as far as using our excess fuel up. So everybody needs to stick together. If you want to buy something, park your car or truck, go in and buy your stuff, and you'll save a lot of gas.
I LIVE in Scott City and I would just like to thank my mail carrier for delivering my mail on that terrible day after the storm. I talked to him and he said that they didn't even have any power at the post office, that they had to put the mail up in the dark, but they came through. Way to go, Scott City Post Office. Thanks for the great service.
RECENTLY there was a comment in Speak Out from a person who felt that is was bad that the professional basketball teams would offer a contract to a player just out of high school as if they were cheating him out of something. When I got out of high school I was in the service for several years and crawled through the mud for $300 a month. All I have to say, if someone offers my son a guaranteed salary of several million dollars a year and he's 18 years old, my suggestion would be to take it. I don't see how that's abusing anybody. Further, if he were to become unable to play basketball in the future, he could always afford to go to school afterwards, that's for sure.
I'M CALLING in reference to the letter that said students were degraded in television reporting. I agree with Miss Fornkahl. I'm one of the baby boomers, and I agree we're not giving the younger generation credit. They're highly educated. I know Miss Fornkahl personally, and she's one of the students I'd put second to none in my generation. I just feel that we're not giving them credit where credit is due. In today's society, if you ask some of the baby boomers if they know what DOS on the computer means, they'd probably think that means "donuts on Sunday."
WHAT A great way to start a day with today's prayer. To the person who doesn't want to read it, don't look up in the lefthand corner and read the prayer. That is what freedom is all about. We don't have to read everything. I don't keep up and read everything. Southeast Missourian, keep up the good work. We surely enjoy your paper.
A COUPLE of years ago, a congressional commission made up of both of Democrats and Republicans including former Sen. John Danforth concluded that entitlement spending, if left unchecked, will consume the entire U.S. revenue shortly after the turn of the century. Every single dime the government takes in will go toward entitlements (and interest on the national debt). Given this fact, what would the Clintons, Gephardts, Carnahans, Mr. Miller of Tamms and all the other liberals do to correct this situation? They constantly defend their precious giveaway programs but offer no suggestions in how to pay for them. When Republicans attempt to preserve worthwhile programs by cutting unnecessary spending, these liberals accuse them of everything from putting elderly on the street to starving kids. I have but one question for Gephardt, Miller and the other liberals who seem to have all the answers. How do we maintain entitlement programs in their present form without raising taxes on an already overtaxed citizenry? Do we pull the extra money out of a magic hat or what? I'm waiting for an answer. Not more of your scare tactic rhetoric, but a concrete answer.
