I AM a daughter of the Confederacy. My children are children of the Confederacy of which I am very proud. The Confederate flag, to me, is a symbol of a gentle way of life that once was only in the South. If you'll study your correct history, you'll find that there was also slavery in the northern states. The Civil War was not about slavery. It was about industry and money. You may conquer in war, but you will never conquer a man's heart and soul, and you can never keep a good southerner down.
HERE WE are in one of the great earthquake belts in the country, and these people are talking about putting more dirt on top of the levees and building more lakes. My understanding is that if there's an earthquake and the water is a certain level against these walls, the walls of earth will liquefy, and the stuff will run all over. I just can't understand the thinking of people who are talking about putting a foot on a levee at a time when the whole thing might go right out, and they'll have less than nothing when they're done.
IF THE government gave me $9,000 a year for not working my farm and I get $90,000 in 10 years for not working or sitting on my duff, I'd want to keep my farm too. The only problem is, the $90,000 is taxpayers' money.
I WAS appalled when I read about the prisoners who died in that van. I wonder if any of those prisoners were given a death sentence at the time of their trial. Obviously, the van was not properly maintained, because I'm a mechanic, and it sounds to me like a U-joint broke and sent the drive shaft into the gas tank. As much money as these people are making and the fact that they're carrying people handcuffed and shackled with no way of escape, at least they could maintain their vehicles. I hope somebody investigates this and takes a long look at it. Those six men did not have to die.
