IN THE article about students and police in schools, it says for years the officers have worked with the very successful DARE program to help reverse drug use. I want to say, if it's that successful, how come drug use is higher than ever amongst the younger crowd?
CAPE GIRARDEAU is known as a Christian city, but when the Show Me Center decides to make a beer commercial in Cape Girardeau, it just goes to show you how easily people go to lay aside their beliefs and go to a beer commercial. The Show Me Center has hit a new low.
WHAT CAN we do? What can be done? Clinton and Gore need to be impeached. The United States has lost credibility and morals due to their dishonesty and lying. We have elected officials who campaigned on balanced budget, cutting taxes and less government. Since they are in office now, they have changed their minds about the balanced budget, taxes and less government. What we need are statesmen as leaders who care about their country instead of politicians that want power, money and names for themselves. When are we going to wake up? When it's too late?
THIS IS in regards to the former inmate of the Cape Girardeau County jail complaining about how crowded it is. If it's so darn crowded, please quit doing things to make yourself be put back in jail. As far as prisoners getting no respect from the sheriff, I don't think any prisoner should have respect. You're in there for punishment, and I don't care if you're as crowded as a sardine in a can. I think they should feed you bread and water the whole time you're in jail.
IN THIS day of violence, abuse and drugs, we don't often see the natural beauty of our world. There is so much sickness and disease, we have to wonder, when will it end? And we must look to God for the answer. And then in the briefest of moments, we walk into a room and see a mother breast feeding her child and realize God has given his answer.
A RESPONSE to breast feeding in public. What a shame that you left the doctor's waiting room with your child because a mother was doing what comes naturally. This could have been a most wonderful opportunity for your son to be shown, not just told, that women's breast are not just sex symbols. They are a very beautiful part of nurturing made for that purpose for our God.
I GATHER from Stan Crader's letter to the editor that someone against the lake project has made threats against the Crader family. That is the meanest thing I've ever heard of. It's hard to believe that someone is so opposed to the lake they would resort to threats against someone's life. Good grief, it sounds to me like some angry landowner is not of good sound mind, as Mr. Crader so kindly put it.
THIS IS in response to the person who said "so what" for the bombing of the gay club in Atlanta and the abortion clinic. The major difference between those bombings and the Waco incident was the people in the Atlanta bombings were law-abiding citizens either out on the town having a good evening or exercising their legal rights. The people of Waco were resisting the government and authority. That's difference.
I'D LIKE to comment on the former inmate's comments about the Cape Girardeau County Jail and its conditions. I was a prison guard for the state of Illinois for the past 10 years. Everything's deplorable to inmates. The trouble with most inmates, they want to run the facilities. I haven't seen one inmate yet who is satisfied with his prison conditions.
PEOPLE, PLEASE take the opportunity that the paper has been giving you to read and assess the school bond issue. We need this bond issue in our community. I'm a parent and a grandparent. You've got to be able to see it's going to boost our community, help bring people in, help bring industries in. Please get out there and vote yes for this. We've got great school teachers in this community, and we've got great children to build on our future, but we've got to have the modernized schools, we've got to have the new schools to put our children in. Look how the Jackson community has grown since it built new schools. It's just a plus if we pass this in this community. Please pass it for the future of the children in this area. We need to school bond issue to pass in this community. It's a must.
I AM so tired of welfare recipients being rewarded for their irresponsible behavior. They have more children and get more money. They hurt themselves doing drugs or alcohol. They get Medicaid. And now I understand that President Clinton would like to give them all civil service jobs. Civil services jobs are supposed to be on merit basis. They're supposed to be competitively given. Instead, Clinton wants to make them welfare jobs so people can be on the public dole for all of their lives. Civil service jobs are good jobs. They're jobs that people who have not used and abused the system would like to have. Now they're going to be eliminated from these jobs because of people who have used and abused the system. I'm tired of welfare recipients being rewarded for bad behavior. Let's work out a system that would make them be rewarded for good behavior.
I SUSPECT that we have too many self appointed experts on Freon and the atmosphere. The Speak Out item stating no ozone measurements were taken until 1956 is similar to saying the first solo trans-Atlantic flight occurred in 1962, not mentioning that that was by jet aircraft. Lucky Lindy, of course, used an old-fashioned propeller plane in 1927. American astronomer George Hale and German scientist Herman Helmholtz both noted a hole in the ozone around 1890-1895 while studying sunspot activity. American scientist Donald Menzel studied the ozone and its infamous hole in the 1940s. Lab research was indeed initiated in 1953. Freon, a complex atom of the oxygen we breathe, is damaging to petroleum-based products. It's atmospheric consequences, however, can be compared to helium. Both are lighter with air, they quickly dilute when mixed with the moisture and dust in the air and fall harmlessly back to earth. I fear the experts in recent columns are college professors, and our future scientists and chemists may be ill-prepared if their taught with such superficial methods. I'm not expert, but I do read and I read enough to know the freon ban was economically and not scientifically based.
I'D LIKE to thank the family in the 1600 block of William Street for the beautiful Easter decorations out in the front yard. It is truly a random act of kindness, because I was having such a bad day and just driving by lifted my spirits.
THEY MUST have needed more money up at the college for the new president's inauguration because they're making a beer commercial there at the Show Me Center that is aimed directly at the young people. I think the college and Show Me Center has their priorities all wrong.
WE HEAR a lot about racism in this country and one of the things I'm reminded of is a quote by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. "The principle on which this country was founded and by which it has always been governed is that Americanism is a matter of the mind and heart. Americanism is not and never was a matter of race and ancestry."
IF SEMO'S looking for a mascot, why don't they get a beer keg? Then everybody will be happy.
