I'M CALLING on a Random Acts of Kindness. The Happy Helpers pantry at Tamms selected six ladies that lived alone with no families living close to them. We took them a Mother's Day card from a special friend and bag of groceries. We got lots of hugs and thanks for all of them. We really felt good after we got that done and we plan on doing that on Father's Day. We plan on finding six fathers that live alone and don't have a family.
GOD BLESS the American Indian who called Speak Out about the genocide of Indians without bitterness and remains a loyal proud American about our involvement in Kosovo. Shame on the VFW.
TO THE man that is half Indian I say, don't be so quick to place blame. One side of my family came to Massachusetts and purchased land from the Indians in the 1630s. The Indians came into the area and killed many of my relatives. They've fought Indians regularly for at least 100 years on the land they had bought. That was the reason for what you call ethnic cleansing. The Indians did not adapt to the white man's culture and resorted to kidnapping and killing white people. You had to be pushed and shoved to make you stop your predatory ways.
IN TODAY'S newspaper there's an editorial, the lead editorial, about the terrible situation with the Cape Girardeau Schools being in a hold harmless situation with the state. The Cape Girardeau Schools are in a hold harmless situation because they're one of the 40 most prosperous school districts in the state. There's 40 schools in the state that the state will not give any extra money to until they help the other schools catch up and receive an equal amount of money, more or less. It's a complicated formula, I'm sure. But the Cape Girardeau Schools have more money than almost all other school districts. And because of that, the state will only give them the same amount of money that they gave the schools in 1992. We should quit our belly-aching about being so lucky. We have more money than almost any other schools, we're spending more money than almost any other schools and we have a pretty good education system. So, let's be thankful.
SO GLAD a capacity crowd enjoyed the outstanding Army Ground Forces Band Sunday afternoon at Central High School. The great performance and a wonderful tribute to the U.S. forces was very impressive. Thanks to the Southeast Missourian for co-sponsoring this outstanding event.
I JUST read in Sunday, May 16's paper Monica Charen's commentary about Baby Hope and the pro-life choice. I am pro-life, but people have a choice. They can use birth control. There's many different kinds if they don't want to get pregnant. But when I read this issue about what this woman did, I just cannot believe it. And they wonder why are our children are violent and there's so much violence on TV. A country who can't care for its unborn, can't care for anything.
I'M DISAPPOINTED in the Southeast Missourian. You have traded a cute picture on your front page of a high school mom and her baby for a message to thousands of area youth that teen-age sex is acceptable and glamorous and hey, you might even get your picture on the front page.
EDITOR'S NOTE: That certainly wasn't our intention and we apologize if we offended anyone. We received several calls about the photograph and will certainly keep these comments in mind as our staff photographs future such events. We appreciate the feedback.
