Jackson is clean, beautiful

I'M CALLING in regards to the city of Cape Girardeau as well as the city of Jackson. You can go to Cape Girardeau any day of the week and see trash all over the city and tree branches to the shoulder of the curb. And you can go to Jackson, and it is a very clean, beautiful town.

Getting past skin color

THIS TOWN has not come a long way when it comes to racism. Sometimes it seems we're still living in times of slavery. Larger cities have gotten past skin color. When is Cape Girardeau going to wake up?

At $200 a square foot ...

ACCORDING TO an article in the Sept. 1, 1995, issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, Dale Nitzschke left the University of New Hampshire, where he was president, in financial chaos. Cost overruns on a variety of construction projects caused salary freezes, limited travel and long-distance phone calls as well as cuts in research programs, agriculture and continuing education and ultimately resulted in a 5 percent increase in student tuition. Chancellor Nitzschke says build the River Campus and they will come. At $35 million and $200 a square foot, they better come, and in large numbers.

Thanks for the test drive

I JUST wanted to call and thank the guy driving the red Expedition. The reason I'm thanking you is my husband and I have been thinking about buying one of those new fancy Expeditions. But after driving behind you for about 10 minutes around town as you and I were obviously running the same errands, I've decided I don't want one. Obviously it's got several functions on it that don't work, one of which is the brakes. Every stop sign you came to, you weren't able to come to a complete stop and you rolled right through, even when cars were coming. So if the brakes don't work, I don't want it. I also noticed the turn signals don't work, because at every corner you just breezed through them, and those signals didn't work. I just thought you might want to know that. Also, your speedometer obviously doesn't work. I don't want a car if the speedometer doesn't work. I tried to keep up with you in a 35-mph zone next to a park in a residential area with kids playing in the front yard, and you were going in excess of 44. So you didn't get your money's worth, because not all your car parts are working. I thought you might want to check that out and go back to the dealer and complain a little bit. The next time, a policeman might be catching you, and I don't think playing ignorance and your car being at fault is going to work.
