RARELY HAVE I been so irritated as I was at the "Time to post sign at White House" caller. This individual doesn't seem to understand. This was an act between two consenting adults. I don't believe in it, but that's exactly what it was. It has nothing to do with him looking for little kids. You're a sick person. You really are...

Comment from a really sick person

RARELY HAVE I been so irritated as I was at the "Time to post sign at White House" caller. This individual doesn't seem to understand. This was an act between two consenting adults. I don't believe in it, but that's exactly what it was. It has nothing to do with him looking for little kids. You're a sick person. You really are.

Waxing nostalgic for depression, war

I READ a lot of columnists. Jack Stapleton is the only one I've read who has ever waxed nostalgic for the days of the Great Depression and WWII.

Parents need to support school district

I READ with interest your Aug. 16 article about the school district developing a security plan. I am very impressed with what the Cape Girardeau School District is doing for security. Many parents have said, oh, we need security with metal detectors at every door and so on and so forth. But I've worked in an inner-city school district. My school did have metal detectors at every door, and that's not the answer. If students want to get weapons in, they will anyway. These kids are ingenious at finding ways to get a weapon in the school. The best deterrents to school crime is a staff that's aware of what's going on and a staff that is truly involved in the school instead of just hiding out in their room, which I think we have at the public schools here in Cape. The staffs are involved. The staffs do care. Another ingredient we need is parents who are supportive of the school district, who are not sitting at home griping and complaining about everything, so that the child knows he can't play the parents off against the school. Parents should support the teachers, unless, of course, the teachers are doing something wrong, but then it should be discussed with the teacher privately, not in front of a child or in front of every neighborhood kid. The parents in Cape seem only to want to gripe and complain when things are not the way they want. Even if you work full-time, you can find some time to be involved in your school district. It's just for the years your kids are in school, then you can go out and do whatever you want with your life. But, folks, you've got to support this district and quit your bellyaching. The kids realize you don't like the district and that you don't have faith in it. They see that, and they play you off against the school. I think the schools are doing their part. Now the parents need to start doing their part.

All dictators fail in the end

THE WHOLE world has now seen what a despicable man the United States has for a president. So is it any wonder that the farmers have no export outlet for their products? And many other industries are suffering the same. Global economics demand cooperation with other countries, not division by warring against countries and showing dominance and arrogance toward other nations. Clinton's actions have set nations against the United States, so the farmers and other industries are suffering due to his foreign-dominance policies. Dictatorships have never been successful. They all fall in the end, as Clinton will too.

Sign at White House doesn't make sense

I'M A U.S. citizen, and I'm commenting on "Time to post a sign at the White House." I'm not a big fan of Bill Clinton's, but there were so many scandals before Bill Clinton ever hit the White House. No one ever put a sign up. So why should there be a sign in front of the White House? That doesn't even make good sense.

Show what the good kids are doing

I WAS watching TV over the weekend where the little girl sang the national anthem at the baseball game. I thought that was really great. Why can't we have more kids who do good things instead of putting all the bad stuff kids do in the paper and on TV. Let's show what the good ones are doing.

Never thought we'd sink so low

I WOULD like to comment about the commentators on the major networks complaining that George Bush won't admit he's done cocaine. Why should he? All the reporters will do after he answers that question -- which is probably no -- is ask him if he's ever had an affair. Bill Clinton has lowered the standards of America. It's an awful thing to say, but I never thought I'd live to see the day.

Young people are paying the most

FOR THE person who called in about "Tax cuts after saving Social Security," the difference is that now, for the young people paying their way, their taxes are five times higher than what they were when the older people paid their way. Young and middle-aged people today, especially if they have no children, no tax cuts, believe me, they pay their way. If one is disabled at a young age, it's like he might as well cut his throat. You sink deeper and deeper, and there's no way out because you still pay high taxes and you still go into debt.
