Clean bill

When are the people who call Speak Out accusing Democrats of being mental midgets going to grow a brain of their own? The Democrats offered the same savings on the marriage penalty that the caller is complaining about. The only reason the working class does not have the $700 tax cut the caller referred to is that the Republicans loaded down the same measure with numerous tax cuts for the wealthy. The president offered to sign the marriage-penalty repeal if the Republicans would give him a clean bill. Blame the Republicans, not the Democrats.

Out of control

This is concerning the accidents recently involving tractor-trailer trucks and vehicles. Have you noticed that almost always there is a tractor-trailer involved? These trucks are driving so fast on any highway that it is almost impossible to drive with them. They are way out of control, and the state highway patrol needs to be watching more carefully.

Oilmen in charge

As you fill your car up with gas with the high prices think about electing two oilmen as president and vice president.

Widen the trail

I read they were going to extend the bicycle and walking trail to Sprigg, which is a really good idea. I also read it was only going to be 4 feet wide. That is half the existing width of the trail they have now, which is going to be way too narrow. It will, in fact, be unsafe. They need to make it a minimum of at least 8 feet wide so that both walkers and cyclists can use it without accidents.

High-level hypocrisy

The very moral Republicans spend millions on hate radio, TV and books based on lies. This represents hypocrisy at its highest level.

Gun locks for all

Clinton AND Gore should demand that the Secret Service who guard them have gun locks on their pistols as they carry them around to protect them. They want everybody else to have them. They don't want to abide by things they want to force on other people. But I think this should be reported as to whether or not the Secret Service agents have gun locks on their guns..

Read them

To all the Sikeston school board members who have the Ten Commandments posted in their yards, you should the time to read them.

Driving habits

I'm calling in regard to the comment about lower speed limits. The higher number of accidents and fatalities is not due to higher speed. Generally accidents are caused by people who don't pay attention and who don't know how to drive in high-traffic areas. I am in the Cape area and Jackson area a lot and also in the St. Louis area where speed limits are higher or at least as high. What I find in Cape and Jackson is that people go slower in the fast lane than those in the slow lane. People are in the fast lane and should be in the slow lane. I also find that people don't use their turn signals in high-volume or high-speed traffic in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson area. They travel too closely to the vehicles in front of them, and they don't allow enough stopping time. Most of this caused by drivers who are not familiar with what it takes to drive in a high-volume high-speed traffic area and probably would be greatly benefited by better training or better education on that, maybe possible some television or radio spots.

No conscience

Democrats have labeled Mr. Lieberman as the conscience of the Democratic Party for condemning Mr. Clinton's adulterous behavior. Get real. About 90 percent of the Democrats in the House attacked Mr. Lieberman for not sticking up for the president. When you support abortion and every filthy and atheistic group and even a pervert in the White House, you have no conscience.

Weather lesson

I have finished reading Brian Alworth's letter analyzing the weather article printed in the Southeast Missourian. I was glad to hear from the opinion of a weather specialist what I suspected for many years: It is cooler in the shade than in the sun.
