RIVERSIDE REGIONAL Library: Now that the book sale is over and I've cooled down, I would like to comment. I pay $24 a year to use the facilities of the library. Once a year the library has a book sale and offers books at a very cheap price. The library used to have the sale at the library. Now they take the books to the mall. I inquired and was told by the librarian that Friends of the Library thought it was a good idea. With friends like this, it sure doesn't need any enemies...

It's not convenient

Asking for too much

I'M A senior citizen, but I'm so disgusted with many of my fellow seniors wanting more freebies, more government handouts and whining every day about more from the government. Where do they think this money and programs come from? It's the taxes on our young people. The taxes should be reduced. When will some of you get enough? When you croak? What selfishness and outright greed without a conscience.

A good American

WE LIBERALS can stand the truth as long as it's really the truth. Most of us are hardworking people. We pay taxes. We fought, and a lot of us died, in the wars. A true liberal does not want a government handout. But if we're having trouble, we would like a hand and be able to give others a hand. That's being a good American, not just being a liberal. It's the conservatives who really cannot stand the truth, because they know the Democrat liberals have done more for this country and the poor in Roosevelt's 11 years than the Republican Party has done during its existence. The Republicans want to save Social Security, of course, like the fox wants to save the hen house.

Voters have the power

MANY DEMOCRATS say they're going to vote Republican for the first time because they want to clean that trash out of the White House and all their cohorts and bring sanity back to government. This debacle has gone on long enough. Voters will have the last word.

An awesome tribute

MEMORIAL DAY 2000: Once again I made a trip out to the county park to view the beautiful avenue of American flags just like I always do each year on this day. Each flag has a very special meaning for a very special person who served in the wars. Some gave their lives fighting for their country. Some, like my three brothers and husband, were the lucky ones who came home to tell about it. It is certainly a great tribute, and I never to cease to stand in awe of its beauty. Let us always keep the avenue of flags right where it stands. To the VFW I also want to give my thanks for making the avenue of flags such a spectacular display.

An insulting alternative

I WAS so disgusted to read in Sunday's paper about the military being in such atrocious condition that they can no longer send a bugler to play "Taps" at a military funeral. Instead, a recording of "Taps" will be played. A defense department spokesperson, Lt. Col. Katherine Abbott, remarked that it is no big deal. The family would not see the bugler anyway. That is one of the most insulting, offensive, uncaring statements I have ever heard. It is so sad that we have higher ranking military people with that attitude. I can assure Abbott that there will be no tape played at the funeral of members of my family who are entitled to military rites.

Protect our products

I'D LIKE To talk about this China trade deal. All this is going to do is close more factories in our country. Our congressional representative voted for this. She is also for opening up trading with Cuba. Because of the farmers' products I can well understand this. I'm with the farmers 100 percent. I know they have a rough way to go. But, our politicians will not protect the American worker by putting tariffs on the stuff that comes back into this country. Now one of the guys on TV stated that they couldn't keep factories from going to China. That's true, but if they had any guts, they'd put tariffs on Chinese imports. I'm tired of going into the stores and finding hardly anything made in the United States. So, politicians, you'd better take heed. This is going to cost American jobs because the politicos don't have the guts to stand up to these people.

Find another location

I THINK it's terrible that they're even thinking about moving the Veterans Memorial at Cape County Park. It is such a beautiful tribute to our veterans, and also a sight to behold. Also, the veterans organizations raised funds for the memorial, so I think it would be a slap in the face to our veterans if they would move this beautiful memorial. It is in the right place. There are other locations in the park where the nature center can be built.

Computers and society

I HAVE a comment on the Speak Out item titled "Computers not salvation." I have to agree with the caller on this issue. My husband and I almost ended up in divorce court because of a computer with Internet access. I'd like to say to everyone, especially you Christians, you need to seriously consider the problem that is at hand with this. The computer and the Internet are the leading cause of divorce now in America. I think it's a sad situation to watch this when people bring those things into their home and get on the chat lines and let the chat lines become addictive. It's so pitiful. I think everyone needs to think about that and really watch it, especially the children who are getting addicted to these things and meeting people onlne. It's amazing what this is doing to our society.

Moving the bottleneck

FOR THE life of me, I've seen some crazy things around town, but this fiasco they have on Broadway has to be one of the biggest wastes of taxpayer dollars I've ever seen. All they're doing is moving the bottleneck from Clark Street about eight blocks further down to Perry. At what cost? They're moving the bottleneck and blowing the taxpayers' money. And the mayor gets up there and says it's a great improvement. Yeah, right.

Hummers didn't stay

I'M CALLING to respond to the caller who asked about the hummingbirds. I've bought a new feeder and everything, and they came for about 10 to 14 days, then left. I haven't seen one since. We live between Jackson and Fruitland.

Know who you are

EVERY HUMAN being has a right to know who he is and where he came from. To deny a person that right is to let him live a lie. He's lying about his roots, his name, his personality. It's a lie from the get-go. Your roots, who you are, your genes tell more about you than your environment does. I've said that for 70 years, and the scientists are just now beginning to discover that. Ain't that something?

Property etiquette

PRIVATE PROPERTY: Why is it that horseback riders, four-wheel riders, hunters and fishermen don't understand that concept anymore? They sneak in, destroy property, leave gates open and scatter their trash, and then wonder why the property owner gets upset with them when they catch them and make them leave. Perhaps if we farmers got together and had a big party on the offenders' front lawns without their permission, they would begin to understand what private property means.

Positive about Jackson

I AM proud to live in Jackson. And I'm proud of our school district. I'd like to challenge anyone who has Jackson pride to call Speak Out. Let's be positive again. Let's be positive about Jackson.
