I KEEP hearing about this George Bush's home state is Texas. He's no more from Texas than I am, but I've probably lived there longer than he has. He's from a little town in Maine called Kennebunkport. Like Stephen King, the writer. They both have the same amount of chance of being the next president.
I AM so tired of hearing that the rich don't pay taxes. If that's so, I wonder why my grandson is paying $50,000 in taxes this year. He isn't really that rich. He just as a well-paying job and works hard. This has been said for years, and it's not true. They pay the most because they make the most.
I'D LIKE to remind people what happens when tax cut weren't made for the wealthy. I recall the boat companies were going under and people were losing jobs. When the rich are not investing in business, it hurts people more. That's why Ronald Reagan made the changes he did. As much as we all like tax cuts, sometimes there's a reason the system is the way it is.
DOES ANYONE seriously think that God or the Ten Commandments would have stopped the killings in Littleton? Do you think Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold would have walked in and seen the Ten Commandments and said, "Thou shalt not kill? You've got to be kidding me! When did that happen?"
NOT CONDONING Mr. Rocker's remarks, but many 25-year-old kids are immature. We have a double standard. What about Dennis Rodman, a freak who gets away with weird, sick, filthy behavior in the NBA? Certainly no role model. How about professional ball players who have been arrested for drugs, assault and many other offenses and never had the punishment that Rocker had? If it had been a minority athlete, he would have had the ACLU, the NAACP and Jesse Jackson defending him. Even this trash peddler Jerry Springer demeaned John Rocker on his program. What a sick public.
ISN'T IT strange that Clinton and Gore can brag so big about the development of the Internet but can't find a solution to the oil and high gasoline price problem? They have thrown a heavy tax increase on Americans three ways lately: the gasoline increase, the Internet increase and the tobacco increase. What will be next? Working Americans need to vote this greedy Al Gore puppet off the ballot before they break the working man down to a slave for the government.
THREE CHEERS on the Speak Out "Wish Clinton could run again." I also do. Everybody cuts him down every day. When we had Reagan and Bush in there, no senior citizens ever got a raise. He never cut taxes. Reagan hiked them up to where us poor middle class people were paying all the taxes. The rich got theirs cut and the poor just got poorer. Three cheers for that. Also the Speak Out "What good does it do?" This is a reply: I think you need to get out and vote because it is our right. The people who vote are the ones who elect our leaders to office.
I WANT to congratulate the management at all of the Sears stores across the country for pulling the Benetton products out of their stores. Thanks, Sears.
GAS PRICES are going up and up and up, and they say they're going to go up to $2 a gallon. Nobody in this country can afford that. Yet the president of the United States had the audacity to say that he could not release the oil because of strategic petroleum reserves to moderate fuel prices. He did say he had not ruled out any action. Well, he has an opportunity to take action now and drive these prices down. After all, he's the president of the United States. He can declare an emergency and release the oil. We've got billions and billions of gallons of oil in Alaska in the ground that could be sent along the pipeline to the lower 40. We don't need to buy from OPEC. We've got billions of gallons of oil sitting in ships in the Gulf Coast waiting to be unloaded. What's going on? What are the president and Congress thinking about? Release this oil and let's get these gas prices down to where poor people can afford to buy gas.
A LOT of the cost of oil and gas and utilities that's going up in price now is that BTU tax that Clinton passed. Clinton is responsible for this. Who else is in the White House? The BTU tax, remember? The largest tax in history? It's just now kicking in. So you folks who wanted Clinton, now you're getting him. You'd better be ready to open your billfolds and pay for this Clinton BTU tax. People told you that it was the highest tax raise that there ever was, especially the one the liberals hate, Rush Limbaugh. Now we're paying the piper for it.
I'D LIKE To congratulate Watis R. Harrell of Chaffee on the letter pertaining to the "Voters say no to school taxes." There is a lot of fat down there that could be trimmed from the budget if they first voted for an 87-cent increase and then lowered it to 47 cents. I think we need to have a new school superintendent. Things can be changed by the next school board election.
I READ in the newspaper about Charles Kurault. You remember him. He used to be the television news reporter that would travel around the country in his Winnebago and give reports on the road. Well, turns out he had two wives and a mistress. He had three entire families with three sets of kids. No wonder he spent all his time on the road.
THE PLAIN truth is, a liberal and the liberal agenda have won the hearts and minds and souls of a public. So get on the bandwagon. The people want bigger government to care for them. I agree, bigger is better. Also, abortion is a woman's right. Personal freedom is the right of an American who has been born, not unborn. Moral values have no place in hard political choices. We have a large part of our society who don't worship any god. They must have a voice and a hand in our future. What a person does in his private life is his business and should not be reflect his public character. America must forget its backward racist unfair past, and the liberals of our country have fought for this. At last, liberalism rules. And what's wrong with socialism?
THERE ARE hoodlums who are destroying and stealing mail boxes along Old Cape Road. If anyone living in this area sees any suspicious activity, please get the license plate number of the car and report it to the sheriff. The vandals are going to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
I AM calling to question the methods and guidelines that Southeast Missouri State University uses to credit transfer classes. I think it's ridiculous that an EMT class will not transfer into the university as anything at all, even as they offer two college credits for CPR and first aid. I think it all boils down to the fact that they want your money more than they want your mind and your experience. You tell me.
WITH THE gas prices going so high and MoDOT saying it isn't going to build the roads it promised us with the 6-cent sales tax we voted in, I was wondering if the liberal Democrats if Jeff City might consider eliminating the 6-cent sales tax so our gas prices wouldn't be so high. MoDOT is not going to build roads with that money anyway.
IF THERE'S ever an award for a doctor or surgeon of the year, I shall nominate Dr. Yingling. Thank you, and God bless you.
I'D LIKE to say something about how high the electric bill is in Jackson when nobody is even living in the house. The light bill was three times as high as it is in Cape, and we still had to pay it. Nobody was even living in the house.
IN REGARD to the comment of parking on Farmington Street in Jackson: If you eliminate parking on both sides of the street, it will be nothing but a drag strip for teen-agers.
I WAS sitting at the table one morning before getting ready for church. I looked at my beautiful plants in the window, and this thought came to me: As a plant needs sun and will reach out towards it, so do our souls. We must reach out for the Son of the spirit so we can grow. The plant needs plant food. Souls need the food of God's Word. Sometimes a plant gets rootbound and can't grow anymore. So is our body a temple for the soul. To grow, it can't be bound up. It needs to be free. Water a plant or it will die. So our souls must be watered by the stream of life that flows from God's throne. We must realize that though a plant grows strength and food from the sun, it doesn't grow until the darkest hours. That is when we get our spiritual growth.
