Rules, rules, rules; Let's talk; No shortcut; Recycling advice

Rules, rules, rules

THERE are endless laws, rules and regulations on the books, along with the ones that are still coming, like cap-and-trade and the energy legislation. There have been 51,000 new rules and regulations adopted since 1995. They are not about breaking your bad habits. They're about breaking your spirit by sending you the message that you are no more important or significant than the spotted owl. These laws are a stark reminder that your significance as individuals depends on the recognition you are granted by the state.

Let's talk

LET me get this straight. A man threatens someone with a screwdriver in Jackson. The police chase him through Cape, across the Mississippi River. He's apprehended in Illinois, taken to a hospital in Cape Girardeau to treat his injuries and no one watches him because the Illinois State Police think Missouri has jurisdiction and the Missouri authorities think Illinois has jurisdiction. To borrow a line from the movie "Cool Hand Luke," "What we have here is the failure to communicate."

No shortcut

I live in Jackson and I cannot see why anyone from Jackson going to Cape Girardeau would use LaSalle Avenue. It connects you to Route 2 two miles from the Jaycee Municipal Golf Course. Even if I was going to downtown Cape Girardeau or the Show Me Center it would be the least convenient, longest and most time-consuming way to go.

Recycling advice

I'M trying to go green, but right now I'm seeing red. This is directed to my fellow recyclers. I just returned from the Jackson Recycling Center. Someone dumped a huge load of cardboard boxes in front of the closed recycling center. That wasn't a smart idea. Operating hours are clearly posted. This is a nice recycling center. It is free and well-organized. There are 10 bins clearly labeled as to what goes where. Don't dump everything in one bin. It takes some extra effort to recycle. Jackson is putting forth extra effort and money to let us recycle. Don't ruin it for us by causing extra work.
