Learning about terrorism

THIS IS in response to the caller who commented about the new course being taught at Southeast Missouri State University on terrorism. The course is a history of terrorism, current international trends and counterterrorist tactics. I can honestly say after having Dr. Lyon for two undergraduate courses that she ranks as one of the best and most knowledgeable instructors at Southeast. Let's pray to God that students take the course and become a little more knowledgeable about terrorist activities and more informed about counterterrorism.

Dangerous curve

I LIVE on Big Bend Road. On July 29, there was an automobile accident in front of my house that broke my fence. I have called the city about putting barricades up, but I'm not getting any response from anyone. Recently there was another accident that took out the other part of my fence. Why aren't dangerous curves like this being made safer?

Turning to values

ISN'T IT odd when our county has a national emergency or risk of disaster that no one turns to liberal values for guidance? We look to spiritual values and conservative morals. If the world were coming to an end today, no one would be voting on gay rights or passing out birth control. Our country was built by men who believed in God and had values.

Attacking Democrats

WHEN WAS the last time you read a column by David Limbaugh that was anything other than an attack on Democrats? Just one example of his hypocrisy was his argument of how Republicans should be able to use the war or terrorism in their political statements, but it is wrong for the Democrats.

Funding for terrorism

I THINK it is wonderful that the families of Sept. 11 victims are suing Saudi Arabia for killing their family members. The Saudis are using the money we pay for oil and turning it into funding for terrorism.

Government study

IT WOULD be wise for our mayor and city council to read the city charter. It appears that our city officials are trying to change our form of government. According to the charter, the mayor has only ceremonial duties. We need a commission to study our local government and see if it is working correctly.

Money and diet

A LOT of poor people prefer white bread instead of wheat bread. More money isn't the solution for this problem. Some who have money don't eat fresh fruit and enjoy snack foods and eat what can be considered a poor diet. Money often has nothing to do with your diet.

Easy revenue

THIS IS for the mayor and council members of Cape Girardeau. If you want a tax increase, why not put cameras at the intersections and arrest all those the run the lights on a daily basis? I see people running the red lights at intersections all the time. It would raise a lot of money for the city.

School warning

ACCORDING TO a news article, the Cape Girardeau School District can increase taxes without a vote if we want it or not. We have been lied to multiple times, and I am sick of it. The superintendent and board members would all be gone if I had anything to say about it.

No more dog-and-pony

I CAN'T believe it. The paint isn't even dry on the new high school, and the Cape Girardeau School District is calling for a tax increase. I will not support it. I listened to the dog-and-pony show the last time, and I won't do it again.

Track is open

I'D LIKE to clear up a misunderstanding about the track at Southeast. It is not closed to the public. It is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the times when no staff are on site, the public can gain access by calling the director's office. The university is trying to protect people and the property from damage.
