OBAMA'S RUNNING ads criticizing McCain for talking negative toward Obama but Obama, about all he's talking about is negative things against Bush. Now, where's the fair balance? If he can talk about people, why can't somebody else? All he's trying to do is gather votes.

McCain could live in tent

MCCAIN IS worth a lot because he's the one that has experience in Congress that will help us with this Russia mess. He'll know what to do. Obama's trying to throw a flap about McCain having multiple houses. Well, his wife is wealthy, comes from a wealthy background. I don't think it makes a difference to McCain if he lived under a tent or in a house, he's that kind of guy. I think about Regis Philbin on TV, he has multiple homes, but you never forget where you come from. Since Obama is worth $4 million, does that mean he's too rich, too?

Less advertising

HEY, A comment on the new Southeast Missourian. I love the color. You've brought the colors into the paper and it's beautiful. The problem I have with the paper is that there isn't enough of it. There's way too many sale bills. I don't have the money to buy anything and throwing them away. Make the paper fatter, get rid of some of the sale bills and we'll be on track.

Lemons and lemonade

WE OWN a restaurant and it is unbelievable how people order water and then bring their own lemonade packets with them to make their lemonade. They use our ice, lemons and sugar packets at no charge. Waitresses carry this to them, refill their water for them and then they tip according to the price of the meal only, if they tip at all. It's surprising we can stay in business with customers like this.

Binge drinking problem

BINGE DRINKING is indeed a big problem, a university problem to solve by discipline, not by changing the law to accommodate uncontrollable students. If there are no consequences to binge drinking, why would they stop?

Column was disgusting

I'M CALLING to agree with the Speak Out caller that said Bob and Callie Miller's column of Aug. 17, last Sunday, was totally disgusting. After reading several articles about baby poop, one article about shoveling cow manure, they print this deal. If this doesn't stop, my subscription to this newspaper will.

Downtown fails to impress

THIS IS in regard to the start of college. New people are coming into town, students and parents, but I'd say I'd be embarrassed to have the parents go through the downtown area because there's nothing down there but junk stores. There's nothing to look at. Jewelry stores and the furniture store is about all they've got, maybe a bar or two and that's it. Cape Girardeau really thinks it's impressing people by having that area down there like that. They need to do something more than just put a parking lot and trees and all that other stuff. They need to get rid of about half a dozen buildings and improve the looks of the rest of them.

TV news disappointing

I TOTALLY agree with the caller regarding KFVS12. I, too, am disappointed. By the weather, sports and commercials run, it leaves little time for news. But if you miss it, you can be sure the same stories will air for a few days.

Raising taxes

PAGE 5 of the Saturday morning Southeast Missourian states the Cape Girardeau School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Monday to consider a $4.16 per $100 assessed valuation on real property in their district. How did it ever come about that the recipient of real estate taxes would be the beneficiary of their own decisions? Reassessment every two years is apparently not enough for these people.
