AS one of the alienated malcontents who doesn't believe in what President Obama stands for and what he's doing, may I point out that John McCain got more than 40 percent of the vote. I wouldn't count your James Monroe buttons yet. There are a lot of us who don't like the way things are going.
TIMES are tough. Please don't think you're so special that you can't lose your home or job. We need a homeless shelter. It's time we helped our fellow man. We are all God's creations. Just because the homeless don't have access to a shower does not mean they're worthless.
A lot of people, mostly the mayor and his supporters, are saying bad things about evangelist Larry Rice. They say he has a bad track record. He is the only man of God who tries to comply with Matthew 25 that I know of, especially the part that says "when I was a stranger, you took me in." That is Jesus speaking. I ask the mayor and his supporters what other track record are they using for comparison?
THIS message directed to the Cape Girardeau City Council. I want to thank council members for a job well done on Lexington Avenue. The surface grinding made it really smooth. That's a great job. There are some other concrete streets in town that need the same thing, and I'm sure the city is already planning to fix those.
THE story about the Jackson family's eviction touched my heart. May God bless this family with a home and job. It's unthinkable the landlord only gave this family a four-day notice to move. These sad times we're living in. I pray that this family finds a job, and God be with you.
I was just reading in the Sunday paper that there are no homeless individuals who are not being assisted by agencies and resources in this town. That is not true. Have you ever spent any time under the bridge? Our church goes down there, and there are homeless in this town. They may shower at the Salvation Army, but they do not have a place to live. How would you like to live on the street? We're all God's creatures.
THIS message is directed toward the Cape County Park employees. I just want to thank you for the beautiful American flags honoring our veterans. I know that everybody in the area feels the same way.
I feel for the homeless, but the federal building is not a good place for a shelter.
I'M one of the silent majority. If there is a homeless shelter downtown, I won't go into that area. I'd never go downtown to the restaurants or even to look at the river.
REGARDING Magnolia Manor and the Larry Rice/homeless issue: I am a volunteer at Project Hope and have mentored and have done voluntary work there for five years. I hope Dennis Rigdon is still spearheading this. I was so thrilled at the progress he was making, the commitment and the 18-hour days he put into going forth with this only to see what seemed like political issues get in the way of his progress. I did not see his name in the paper, and I, as all of us who have been mentored at Project Hope, pray that Dennis is spearheading the opportunity for what I see as a need for both programs: Magnolia Manor and a transitional home. Nobody wants it in their backyard, but there are some decent people. I would be homeless had I not been mentored through Project Hope. I would be a decent person who might have gone nowhere had it not been for Dennis Rigdon and his team. Those of us whose lives have been changed through Project Hope need to make sure that Dennis is involved and continuing to change lives and to use his visionary gift.
