THE federal government is demanding and receiving more and more tax money from the citizens, which makes it impossible for states and local governments to raise their own money to do the things their own way. We have strayed a great distance from our Founding Fathers' vision of America. They regarded the essential responsibility as that of providing national security, protecting our democratic freedoms and limiting the government's intrusion in our lives -- the protection of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They never envisioned agencies in Washington telling our farmers what to plant and our teachers what to teach or our industries what to build. The Constitution they wrote established sovereign states, not mere administrative districts for the federal government. They believed in keeping government as close as possible to the people.
IT'S a shame we have a landlord doesn't cut the grass or trim weeds around our apartment building. The landlord doesn't hesitate to come pick up the rent.
