Casino reliance

Relying on declining, if not evaporating, revenue from the Isle Capri Casino is the price Cape Girardeau will pay for its failure to support much needed tax increases for the public good and the eventual decline and fall of our city's civilization.

Obama, capitalism

With the stock market reaching an all-time high, I think we can all agree that President Obama has to date done a pretty crumby job of destroying capitalism.

Illegal immigrants

The cost to grant legal status to America's 11 million illegal immigrants -- allowing them to tap into government's vast array of social benefits and services, including already stressed programs like Social Security and Medicare -- could top $6.3 trillion, according to a study by the Heritage Foundation. These are people who have never paid into our system and are going to collect the money you sacrificed in taxes that was withheld from your paycheck. See how Obama is throwing your money away? Where is the outrage? News flash: The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money. That time is fast approaching.

Abortion pill

Regarding the morning after abortion pill: "The rule that's been put forward by the FDA, [Health] Secretary [Kathleen] Sebelius has reviewed, she's comfortable with it -- I'm comfortable with it," Obama said at a news conference in Mexico City. Oh, really? Has Obama read the side effects of Levonorgestrel? For those unaware of the side effects, maybe you should look it up and see if you would want your daughter taking this unsupervised medication.

Mental illness

I would just like to comment after the terrible tragedy in Boston. We're worried about gun control, but how are we going to control bombs? Guns and bombs don't kill people; people kill people. What are they going to do when a person's mind is all cloudy and messed up? We're not looking at guns and bombs, but people with mental illnesses.

Bridge question

I see where the special road district is asking for bids on County Road 649. My question: Will the bridge at Egypt Mills be completed first? The bridge was demolished last year, but it still isn't finished. It is a great inconvenience to those who live there and there is no explanation why it hasn't been completed.

Culture problem

The guy who built the Titanic said, "God himself cannot sink this ship," and we saw how that ended. I get the feeling the culture is saying the same thing, and we're willfully ignoring time-tested common sense ideas like loving your neighbor and doing unto others as you would have them do to you, and instead practicing self-centeredness, sexual perversion and more, and we don't expect there to be any consequences for our actions. Why do we think exposing teens and children to violence and sex won't have any affect on them? Why do we think we can destroy the family with divorce and redefine it to include homosexuality and not think it will undermine our society?
