They got it wrong

MAYBE IT'S time to stop bashing the Democrats for their ideas and pass one of their war spending bills. I like Bill Maher's stance: Why do we keep listening to the predictions of those who have already gotten it so wrong? There were no WMD, we were not greeted as liberators and the mission is still not accomplished. Start withdrawing our forces. No one knows for sure what will happen, besides fewer Americans being killed.

Amazing performance

KUDOS TO Central Junior High School for the wonderful production of "Beauty and the Beast." Mike Dumey outdid himself again. The cast and crew were amazing. Katherine Rollins and Brodrick Twiggs were phenomenal, along with Brandon Tanksley, Matt Diesher, Lauren Dumey, Matt Griffith and Damond Davis. Everyone who was involved should be so proud of themselves for their excellent performance. I can't wait until next year.

Ticket the drivers

JACKSON SCHOOL District school bus drivers were notified of the problem and were told someone was filming them, and they were told they were to come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Yet drivers were still filmed rolling through stop signs. If this is how the Jackson district fixes problems, I think it is failing. It's time to get the police to take care of it. They should write tickets just like they would for any ordinary person in his own car.

Home videos

SINCE WE are considering surveillance cameras in Cape Girardeau's downtown, why not volunteer to let the city install them in your home so the authorities can make sure you don't do anything illegal?

Running red lights

SOMETHING NEEDS to be done about motorists who run red lights in Cape Girardeau. Every time I visit, I see at least three or four vehicles blasting through red lights and nearly causing serious accidents. Maybe if people got hefty tickets for their reckless behavior, it would put a dent in the problem.

Still a bargain

KUDOS TO the regents at Southeast Missouri State University for providing a quality education at such a low price. With some of the lowest fees in the state, Southeast students are getting a bargain.

Weather radio

DON'T WAIT for the city to put up ineffective weather sirens. Spend $20 for a NOAA weather radio for your home. It's just as important as having a smoke detector.

Student films

ON WEDNESDAY night, I had the privilege of seeing the student short films from the film students at Southeast Missouri State University. I was impressed with what I saw. There were a couple that stood out. I wish this could be advertised for the public in the future. Please keep doing whatever it is you are doing.

Cape's discrimination

CAN CAPE Girardeau be any more discriminatory toward people of a lower socio-economic status? It is the close-minded people of a higher society who do not realize that we less fortunate people work a lot harder than they do for a lot less money. We do not have family or friends to help us get the positions you hold, even if we received the same education. Please do not look down upon our children when they are your child's friend. I noticed at a school gathering that many parents treated me differently when they found out that I am not rich or from a well-known wealthy family. I also noticed that they ignored a wealthier African-American family. I am disgusted with Cape Girardeau's discrimination. Many of you may read this and not even consider yourselves in this category. You are lying to yourself.

Health differences

IN RESPONSE to the comment that said, "Let our government officials run your health care and you will be begging for good care for the rest of your life": Many of us have been begging for any kind of health care for much of our lives. The difference between us and those who have health insurance or are on Medicaid is that we do not go to doctors when we or our children have a cold or even the flu or any other minor thing. When we have serious problems, we delay seeing a doctor as long as possible. If we have what might be a life-threatening issue, we often die.

Public opinion

A SIZABLE plurality on the Southeast Missourian's Web site has voted that the Cape Girardeau school board acted too hastily in firing Frank Ellis. The board always says it is solicitous of public opinion. Well, there it is.

Be American

WHY CAN'T people living in the United States be Americans, period? Leave off the country of your heritage. Once a citizen, you should be an American and live the American way and speak English.

Calling the Guard

AFTER THAT terrible tornado in Kansas, the Kansas governor was advised not to formally ask for help from the National Guard and then blame President Bush for not sending the National Guard. There are plenty of National Guard members in Kansas who were ready to help as soon as they were called.

Not on the first row

I AM a pro wrestling fan and have been since I was a child. But every time WWE comes to the Show Me Center I am only able to get fourth-row tickets at the best. For the upcoming WWE event, I found a presale code on the Internet that allowed me to purchase tickets before anyone else. I bought my tickets the instant the presale started and ended up on the fourth row. I listen to the radio every day, and throughout the day first-row tickets are given away. People who are diehard fans should get first-row seats at a concert or any other event instead of radio stations getting them to give away.
