IT'S EASY to deride those who caution against some tiny infraction of time-tested moral standards, because there are seldom immediate disastrous consequences. But when the cumulative effect of all those tiny deeds catches up, derision turns to despair.
SO NOW "the national media is a publicity machine for one party," according to a recent comment. That being the case, my guess is that "one party" is the Republican Party, which is in total disarray. The thing I cannot understand is why this is newsworthy, since it is old news.
THE SCHOOL bus has been dropping off students at the William-Edgewood intersection since I was a kid. I don't recall an accident ever happening there. Most people know what time the buses run and know to watch for the bus and the children getting off of them.
I REALIZE that numbers have different meanings to bureaucrats than to average folks. For instance, we see 11 to 20 illegal aliens as an invasion. They just erase the numbers with a few warmed-over slogans.
I AM not convinced that the anti-military people who support the draft are motivated by bringing diversity (more rich people's kids) to the military. However, even if that was their motivation, they are still wrong. The purpose of the military is to kill people and destroy property, not social engineering.
I FIND it funny that the High Hill Hecklers are being heckled in Speak Out by people who think heckling is inappropriate.
WHY WOULD any cat food company import wheat from China? We all know that more wheat is grown in the United States than we can eat, and our wheat is safe and good quality. The answer is that the wheat from China is cheap. Computers and clothes and shoes from China are cheap. They are not good for America.
I DON'T think raising tuition for students to raise funds for the River Campus is sinful in a religious sense. However, I think it is unethical, shameful and a sorry commentary that it has come to the point where that option is even on the table.
IT IS said that if we leave Iraq without establishing a stable government it will mean "chaos and insecurity for the whole world." The same thing was said about Vietnam. It didn't happen.
THE CURRENT implosion of the housing market, which is only just beginning, is solid proof that the U.S. economy is in trouble. We like to pretend that the middle class is financially secure and living the American dream. In reality, most people are living on a razor's edge between having the things they want and having nothing, usually because of credit cards and questionable home loans. The rich are getting richer, and the rest of us are in denial.
THANKS TO the Community Caring Council and the other local committee members for a wonderful conference on alcohol and substance abuse awareness. The excellent facilitator and panels of local experts provided valuable information. I would encourage everyone who said they would step outside of the box to make a difference to follow through with their promises. Change takes time, but it's time to start doing something.
IF YOU have to use credit to go on vacation, you can't afford to go. Neither can those Joneses you're trying to keep up with.
IT'S UNFORTUNATE that a patient has to die for a medical malpractice case to go forward. The laws protecting the hospitals, physicians and nurses need to change. Three law firms reviewed our records and acknowledged errors but told us that without the patient dying, there was no point going to court. Be informed about your physician and hospital of choice by looking at casenet.com. See who has been charged with malpractice. It could save your life.
I WANT to take the side of the High Hill Hecklers. They give Southeast Missouri State University baseball games a major-college atmosphere. There is nothing wrong with college students having fun and enjoying America's pastime. I have spent some time on the hill, and it is not as bad as some have painted it to be. The hecklers are all polite and respectful people enjoying baseball and doing what every baseball fan has done at one point or another. Shouldn't SEMO and Cape Girardeau be grateful to have dedicated fans at a Southeast sporting event? These guys are there rain or shine. They don't go just for the party. They truly love the sport and the hometown team.
SELLING GLOBAL warming as a man-made threat is a lucrative business. Who do you think finances this hysteria? Taxpayers and business owners who've given in to the extortion. It's the sun. Don't be so arrogant to think that we can raise global temperatures.
I SEE Chaffee has waived the fee for the annual spring cleanup. Maybe more people will clean up their property and take some pride back for what our small town looks like.
I AM a firm believer that things are always not as they appear. Contracts can only be broken without penalty when someone else appears to be blamed. For those concerned about the Broadway businesses, not all of them were busy before the street was closed for repairs. Others that were will soon be back to being busy again. How do I know? I live in the area.
I AM so glad we have so many informed scientists in Southeast Missouri. I can step outside and prove that global warming is true, and I'm not a scientist. When I drove past the bank the other day, the sign said it was 84 degrees in mid-March. Are Southeast Missourians upset because our local library is showing Al Gore's documentary on global warming, or is really because they don't believe in global warming?
