In Illinois, you can drive any speed you want on Highway 146 and Highway 3 without getting a ticket. There's never a highway patrol or a county sheriff car on that road. When I do see them, they're sitting in a parking lot talking to another police car and letting the speeders go by. Evening is the worst. People have plenty of time, but they speed out of habit...

Speed patrol

In Illinois, you can drive any speed you want on Highway 146 and Highway 3 without getting a ticket. There's never a highway patrol or a county sheriff car on that road. When I do see them, they're sitting in a parking lot talking to another police car and letting the speeders go by. Evening is the worst. People have plenty of time, but they speed out of habit.

Funding, safety

I would like to comment on the winter weather and school closings. At noon, all the schools around Cape Girardeau closed early with the exception of Cape Girardeau Public Schools. That seems like putting the children at risk. They are only about funding and don't care about safety.

Small bond

Shame, shame on whomever set the small bond on the man who was charged with deviate sexual intercourse with nursing home patients. Setting the bond at only $10,000 is a blatant disregard for this heinous act against our defenseless senior citizens. Once again, shame on you.

Christmas lights

I don't mind that Cape Girardeau County is going to charge for putting Christmas light displays in the park. If you really think about it, it costs money to run electricity; $20 is more than reasonable.

Emerson's time

I was thinking about the coming special congressional election and all the candidates. The more I think about it, I don't mind that Emerson stepped down in the way she did. I think she did a good job, but I also believe in term limits and as long as the Emersons have held the seat, I think her stepping down was a good thing.

Cape's flavor

What's happening to our community businesses? We've lost our best coffee shop when Grace Cafe closed, our best beer spot when Buckner's closed, our best pizza when Pop's closed and our best burger when Wimpy's closed some 15 years ago. I don't mind Buffalo Wild Wings and Applebee's as much as the next person, but those places aren't Cape Girardeau. The casino isn't part of Cape's identity. It's nice that they're paying the city, but I don't think they add anything new to the town.

Calm down

People need to relax and calm down. I think it's dumb when people get all riled up on Speak Out for no reason, or for a reason they think is important that really isn't.

Crime reports

It seems to me like there are more crimes every time I read the police reports. Does anyone else think so? I hope Cape Girardeau doesn't end up like St. Louis or some other big cities with all the crime problems. Thank God we have a good police department that works hard.

Flag burning

A federal judge ordered Cape Girardeau police officer Matthew Peters and the state of Missouri to pay more than $62,000 in attorneys' fees and costs in connection to an arrest he made in 2009 for flag desecration. I can't believe this is happening. I have been handling the American flag for several years. I make sure that when we are changing it or doing anything with it that it never touches the ground. All old flags are taken to the American Legion to be burned with respect. This is a kick in the face of every soldier that has served to protect it and also the Boy Scouts and school children who pay respect to it.

Curriculum standards

If we don't have common core curriculum standards across the country, then how are we to compare students in one state versus those in another, or for that matter, students within one school as opposed to those in another? Of course, if we had no comparative standards at all, then each local school would once again be able to devise its own and say that, among other things, all students are above average.
