The co-conspirators

IF CLINTON and Reno acted within their legal authority in denying Elian's asylum petition, then why do we even have the INS or the courts? We don't need them anymore. It looks like all the power is in the hands of Clinton and Reno. These comrades are co-conspirators.

Who are these people?

I DON'T know how 10 or 11 people can speak for the community of Jackson on the school bond issue. Sometimes the troublemakers are the ones who show up for those meetings, and the rest of us are too busy raising our children. On the nights that this occurs, my children are either in sports or they're in Scouting. Either night I'm too busy to be running to defend the schools. I made my opinion known when I voted for the school bond issue. I'd be interested to know the makeup of the people who spoke against the bond issue. Were they senior citizens, or people with no children? Just what is the makeup of those people who are against the bond issue here in Jackson?

He shouldn't serve

I'M RESPONDING to the Missourian article, "Candidate hopes felony conviction can be forgotten." This is a gentleman who had three DWI convictions. He violated probation by driving when he wasn't supposed to. He had to serve two years in prison. And he is running for state representative? I hope the voters are clear enough to see that this person cannot represent us. I hope that we are open enough to realize this gentleman cannot ever serve for us as a state representative.

Good Scout causes

I'M CALLING about the item suggesting that the Boy Scouts put flags on the veterans' graves in Cape Girardeau. The caller was complaining that she had to go buy her own flag to put on her father's grave. Why is it someone else's responsibility? If you believe so strongly in the flag and in your father's military service, then you do something about it. Why does everyone expect someone else to carry their load? Boy Scouts have different fund-raising activities, and different troops and patrols support different charitable activities. So the ones here don't do what the Scouts in St. Louis do. So what? They do a lot of other great things. I wish you could hear all the things my son's Boy Scout troop does.

Make it optional

I'VE EXAMINED the channels that Charter wishes to add to expanded basic service. I have a terrific idea. I suggest they just keep their junk and leave the price alone, unless they just want an excuse to raise their prices. Why don't they make this extended expanded service optional? I just don't think they'll have many takers. Surely the city is not going along with this. I think they need to make that survey now, not after the change in channels and increase in price.

Too little staffing

I'M A taxpayer who doesn't want the nature center built in our park, notwithstanding the fact that the memorial would have to be moved. We have a conservation center that is a beautiful place, but it isn't open in the evenings, weekends or holidays when taxpayers might want to take their children there to enjoy. I think they ought to staff the conservation center so that taxpayers can have access to it and forget about a nature center.

Enough control

I REALIZE that my husband and I have to assume the responsibility of paying for our own medicines. But we'd rather do that than give the federal government even more control over our lives.

No concessions

IS THERE a reason why the boys' baseball concession stand isn't open this year? We've been playing for a couple of weeks now, and sometimes after the games the kids like to buy a candy bar or something, but the stand is not open. We have to walk all the way down to the girls' field. Do they need volunteers to run the stand? There are lots of parents who would be willing to work.
