I LIVE in a trailer park in Cape. I think it is pretty bad when a tenant has to use his own weed trimmer because the manager is not taking care of her job. Everyone is supposed to take care of his own yard but not the surrounding areas. I have to pay $145 a month, and I think we should have those areas mowed at least once every two weeks. This place is the worst I have ever seen it, and I have lived here for 10 years. What does everyone else think? The management expects us to obey the rules. Why can't they?
HOW DID we get to this state where we seem to have deified the human race in relationship to all other living species? If we give ourselves such a privileged status, where is the humility? Is a fertilized human egg, no matter how flawed, really sacred or divine? If the fertilized egg is sacred, is there any condition on the exact number of chromosomes that it has to have? All is vanity.
"THE ABM treaty was left mortally wounded, and already beginning to give off a distinct aroma." Missourian, you are telling me that this is a good thing? The disbandment of a treaty designed to reduce arms, in conjunction with Russia, is not a good idea except in the eyes of those few leftovers who still believe the Cold War is at its peak. And just a few days ago, the United States joined the likes of Iraq and Iran in refusing a chemical weapons ban. Wake up to the more peaceful world we live in and quit trying to return to one where Americans live in fear.
PLEASE PUT your illnesses on hold. The vote on the patients' bill of rights has been temporarily postponed so that enough votes can be lined up to defeat it.
TO THE caller who thinks the roundabout is a piece of junk and should be removed, I have two words: Remove yourself.
SHHH! WILL you guys please quit publishing well-written stories calling public attention to the Aug. 7 elections proposing school levy increases for Cape and Jackson? You know as well as I do that the key to their passage is a low voter turnout.
EDUCATED PEOPLE do not have to support embryonic stem-cell research, implored an impassioned Speak Out caller. True enough. Whether formally educated or not, it is also true that many deeply religious people recognize a biblical rationale for favoring it.
DEMOCRATS ARE not "morbidly fearful of any restructuring of Social Security involving private accounts," as David Limbaugh proposed. Considering the way the economy in general and the stock market specifically are going, Democrats sensibly oppose privatization of Social Security because they think that if it was privatized it would be horrifying for so many retirees to have to choose between eating and buying a Southeast Missourian while bedecked in nothing but barrels.
THIS IS to the caller who was upset that the United States hasn't ratified the global warming treaty. If you want to get rid of all those greenhouse gases, then we need to cut down all the trees and dig up all the plants and grasses, because 95 percent of greenhouse gasses come from nature. In fact anyone who knows real science can tell you that life on Earth would be impossible without carbon dioxide.
I MADE a mistake. I took for granted the intelligence level of Missourian readers and dared to use a word with more than three syllables. Misogyny is defined as hatred of women. A misogynist is a woman-hater. Misogyny prompts sexist behavior. I hope I've made myself clear. And don't call me Honey.
FORGET YOUR morality and religious overzealousness. This country was founded on democracy above all, and if the majority of the country wants to be immoral and support things like a woman's right to choose and stem-cell research, then so be it. Majority rules, so quit complaining.
IT SEEMS to me that if a lot of people put the fire they use putting someone down because they're Republican or Democrat into spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we'd have a better country.
TO THE person who called in about the curfew in Cape: I have seen people on the streets late at night in the so-called white area of town. Furthermore, the use of terms such as "white part of town" is not acceptable in today's society, in my opinion and in the opinions of many other readers whom I am confident will join me in expressing this view. Cape Girardeau is better than this.
"ALL GRADES are subjective," thundered an ex-SEMO instructor, apparently trying to bolster the Southeast Missourian against criticism of its grading of Gov. Bob Holden. Thus, in the process of defending the Southeast Missourian, the ex-teacher destroyed its effort by demonstrating the meaninglessness of all grades. I give the comment an A.
THE VOTE to press ahead against the Bush administration's threat to veto the transportation bill is a good move in the fight over the 1993 North American Free Trade Agreement. The vote pitted the Teamsters and highway safety advocates against the trucking industry and big business. The Teamsters have been airing radio ads this week asking listeners to "tell President Bush: Slow down, keep our highways safe." Bush complained that the proposed requirements would clamp tougher standards on Mexican trucks than on Canadian vehicles entering the United States. He urged senators to reject the standards, which include regular U.S. inspections of Mexican trucks and drivers, on-site audits of Mexican trucking companies, and more inspectors and scales at the 27 U.S. border stations. This is not discrimination. This is keeping our citizens safe on our highways. Thank you, Teamsters.
I READ Nancy Probst's column on HMOs with great interest. I have open-access insurance, which means it can be an HMO or a PPO. I have found that the HMO provides better benefits than a PPO. With the PPO, I have a $200 individual deductible, but with the HMO I only pay $15 every time I go to the doctor. That saves about $800 a year for a family of four. I am all for HMOs and wish there were more doctors in Cape Girardeau with HMO coverage.
I'M NOT rich, but I am getting a $600 refund. George Bush is to be commended for his helping of middle-class families. Bill Clinton didn't give us anything but a constant dose of his immorality.
THIS IS to Jackson voters. Remember that if we don't speak out about the way things are by voting, those who want the measure to pass will certainly be at the polls. In order to not have something to complain about later, vote for what you want.
