GET THE federal government out of the business of providing financial assistance for farmers, claimed an Opinion-page contributor and a Speak Out caller. To me, such arguments seem to be primarily designed to assist private banks and would have the effect of returning already financially distressed farmers to the not-so-halcyon days of the Great Depression.
PARENTING IS a job of being in control of your children. A 28-year-old college girl is living at home and controls her parents' checking accounts, legal matters and personal affairs. Letting a child be in control of able adults means the child becomes the parent, and the parents become the children.
I AGREE with the Democrat who said Bob Holden is the worst governor Missouri ever had. I'd hate to think of the flack we would receive if Holden had inherited his mess from a Republican.
I WANT to voice my concern about the culture of misogyny running rampant in the Cape Girardeau community. To the men in this region: Unless you are my husband or a close male relative of mine, you may not call me "Sweetie," "Honey," "Baby," "Darlin'" or any other diminutive names designed to make me feel like I'm about three inches tall. You may not take away my right to choose what I do with my body when you will never understand what it's like to be me. You may not deny me a job simply because I am a woman. You may not touch me without asking permission first. You may not assume that I know how to cook or that I like kids. You may not patronize me. You may not sexually harass or intimidate me. I have a brain in my head that works just as well as yours. I have unique talents and abilities and perspectives to bring to the table. We live in the 21st century now, and it's time some of us started acting like it.
AFTER READING in the Missourian about Gov. Bob Holden's vetoing extra money for battered women's shelters while at the same time negotiating for our tax money to go to the millionaires' baseball stadium, it makes me wonder why I voted for him in the first place. Why should the taxpayers' hard-earned money go for a new stadium so a team of millionaires can play ball and charge a ridiculous fee for their games? My mother is a low-income senior citizen. If her children didn't pay for her prescription medicine, she would have to do without it. I would much rather have my tax dollars go for programs for the poor and elderly than for such stupidity as this. Why isn't this being brought to a vote of the people instead of being decided by a few rich politicians? Guess which ones won't be getting my vote in the next election -- our state Sen. Peter Kinder among them. Come on, citizens of Missouri. Let your voices be heard.
I DON'T doubt that Republicans are three times as likely as Democrats to have nightmares. Peter Jennings alluded to it on a recent news broadcast. If you're not a Republican, ask yourself how well you would sleep knowing a wealth-confiscating and redistributing revolution is at hand.
