PRESIDENT BUSH is giving workers and families tax relief, but Missouri Gov. Bob Holden is planning on ramming through the largest tax increase in Missouri's history. Voters can plainly see which party is for the working people. Tax and spend is the Democrats' motto. Always has been. America needs economic good sense, not political greed and grandstanding. State Sen. Peter Kinder is holding a tight rein on these spendthrifts. He knows the people are suffering from rising gasoline prices, energy costs and eight years of extremely high taxes. And like President Bush, Kinder is compassionate and keeps the working people as his priority. Holden is fork-tongued, announcing the need for further budgetary restraints then promoting the largest tax increase in history on Missouri workers.
I'M SURE the Girl Scouts had good intentions when they undertook their project which earned them national recognition, but I think they've learned a very poor lesson. They sent out 7,800 postcards. As I calculate it, this would cost $1,500. It seems this money could have been used to help the community like contributing to the food bank. I'm not against the Girl Scouts reaching out to other people, but this could have been done by phone or in person, and the $1,500 could have been used for a good purpose. So what is the lesson that they've learned? By doing next to nothing and spending $1,500 doing it, they've learned to get national recognition and local acclaim. This is a very poor lesson indeed.
I WANT to thank the family on Brookwood Drive for getting our dogs back to us. We live near Highway 177, and it was an accident that they got out of our yard. We had contacted the Humane Society, and we were very relieved and grateful when the Humane Society called us back to tell us it had our dogs. Thanks again for helping us get our dogs back.
FROM READING about illegal benefits going to felons and fugitives, it appears government employees are just about like our politicians. They don't care how they spend the money the taxpayers pay, which includes themselves. They just hand out the money like it's water.
I AM a waitress. I despise clearing the table after ill-mannered people blow their noses and leave the germ-laden tissues on the table for us waitresses to pick up. Please throw away your own tissues. Put it in your pocket or purse until you get home.
I COMPLETELY agree with Kathleen Parker's April 22 column that the way to improve education is to improve the quality of teaching and discipline in the schools. But to get this goal accomplished, you'd have to double or triple the educational budgets. You would have to have parents who care about education and are willing to sacrifice for it and willing to raise their children with love and compassion so the children learn to care about themselves and others. In short, you would have to have a society that regards education as its No. 1 priority and is willing to sacrifice for it. Today we have a system that confuses material values with spiritual values. We would have to get our priorities changed first, and everybody would have to do it.
THERE MAY be a lot of things wrong with the Southeast Missourian, but Heidi Hall is not one of them. Hooray for her for watching "The Sopranos," which is truly one of the most original and best of the television shows.
I DON'T know why people are so surprised that it turned cold at this time of year. It usually always turns cold at this time. Maybe not quite as cold as it did this year, but when the snowball bushes are ready to bloom, watch out.
