GOD FORBID, but if something serious should happen to Dick Cheney, who would run the country?
I AM calling to commend the Cape Girardeau school board for not renewing Randie Fidler's contract. I think that is a step in the right direction. We need to consider a strong academic person. I am one to criticize when the board does bad. I am here to commend them for doing good.
I THINK a headline in the March 3, edition of the Southeast Missourian says it all: New ballpark complex seen as economic boon to St. Louis." If it's an economic boon to St. Louis, let St. Louis pay for it.
I WAS just wondering if the engineering genius who designed the roundabout near St. Francis Medical Center is also going to be responsible for driving the snowplow around there next winter.
DEMOCRATS, AND some Republicans, are shrewd. They advocate increases in the minimum wage instead of tax cuts. They know that for every dollar increase in the minimum wage they will share about half of the increase. That's 50 cents for them and 50 cents for you. But for every dollar you get in a tax cut, you keep the entire dollar. They get nothing. Which would you prefer: 50 cents on your dollar or the whole dollar? Dick Gephardt's and Tom Daschle's salary increases depend on your choice.
COLUMNIST DAVID Broder has spent too much time at the lap of Democrats. His recent analysis of George Bush's budget and tax-cut proposals obviously is Big Government pabulum. Let's see. He says the figures don't add up for a tax cut for you, but government could spend more on other priorities. Most of us would prefer a tax cut first, then bring the spending into balance, rather than the other way around. Of course, Broder is the one who wrote a book saying state referendums were undemocratic because they often overruled governmental action. He's just not a government-of-the-people kind of guy.
WHEN PRESIDENT Bush was campaigning, he said he was a compassionate conservative. Webster defines compassion as sorrow for the sufferings of others. I must say, after voting for him and studying his tax plan where 43 to 45 percent of his tax cuts would go to the wealthiest 1 percent, I find it very hard to believe that he has much compassion. I think he has it backwards. I think justice would be better served if Bush would revise his tax cuts to be 99 percent for the lower- and middle-income families who need it most. They would be able to purchase things and pay off their debts and keep the economy moving. The remaining 1 percent should go to the wealthiest people who seem to be doing just fine the way things are. Will the real George Bush please stand up?
YOU HAVE to have a lot of nerve and gall to ask the taxpayers of Missouri to finance part of the expenses to build a baseball stadium. And it is the most ridiculous thing ever suggested to subsidize the millionaires who play ball and the owners. It's a disgrace to most people with any intelligence. How about a tax on Missourians to subsidize my small business? Or to pay me and my employees? I sure would appreciate it. And if you're that gullible, please send me the money.
